Rooms 1-7 are glorified wardrobes with no ventilation and the double bed is against a wall. If the inside person needs to get out you have to climb over the other person. I don't think that management have ever slept in the bed in room 6 or they would replace it immediately. In fairness the food was pretty good and served on hot plates.

Room Tip: Don't bother

It is always upsetting, and fortunately infrequent, when guest do not enjoy their stay and we do try to endeavour to deal with this at the time. All our beds have been replaced over the past 18 months so I can only think you stayed prior to this, apologies for not getting round quicker. I would take issue with your comment re other rooms as I understood you only booked one room, indeed all except 1 mentioned is bigger, but I am pleased that our excellent bar and restaurant were to your liking.

The Hare and Hounds is an old coaching inn with plenty of character, but don't book here if you are wanting romantic luxury! That said, it has been recently refurbished in very good taste, but without pretending to be posh accommodation.
The welcome was pleasant, and the room was simple but very clean and well-equipped. It was just what we had expected and wanted. We slept well.
Breakfast, included in the very reasonable price of the room, was excellent, as was the friendliness of the morning staff.
All in all, superb value for money. The Hotel Inspector would approve, I'm sure!

Room Tip: Light sleeper? Ask for a room at the back.

We booked into this hotel (would call it a pub, not a hotel) at the last minute. Checking in took a long time when we were very tired and another member of staff was talking loudly to her partner within ear-shot - not very professional. The bed was very uncomfortable. The rooms were of low standard and the finish of the decoration was very poor.

We do try to engender a fun environment for our customers by encouraging our staff to be friendly to guests and each other, resulting in our recieving some excellent staff reviews. I do apologise that on this occasion this may have been misconstrued.

We are currently finishing the last phase of a refurbishment of our rooms. After April 15th the last 3 older beds will be replaced, meaning all rooms will have beds of under 18 months old, with LCD/DVD tv's, free DVD library and Freeview. This takes time and money, which we happily invest in order to keep our family owned Olde English Inn in contention with the big boys. I believe that we do offer good value for money, but thanks AntnDebs for taking the time to communicate these problems to us.

We stayed one night to meet with other members of my wife's family (2 other couples) for a pre-Christmas get-together. Our room was the smallest of the 3 but was adequate for a one night stay and was located in a small 2 storey block across the car park from the main building. The bed was comfortable and the heating worked OK which was just as well as the weather still in a prolonged cold spell. We had booked an evening meal for the six of us and as it happened it coincided with the Friday "Steak & Grill night" where they offer a 2 course deal. We found the food and service was excellent and very good value. Breakfast next morning was equally good, we all had variations on a "Full English" and there were no complaints.

In summary a very good venue, easy to find and adequate parking. Excellent value for money and we would certainly go again.

We stayed in this charming hotel en route from Cheshire to Portsmouth.
I travel a lot and stay in everything from quality B&B's to 5* hotels and this is the first that has prompted me to write a review.
The rooms were pleasant and spotlessly clean, bathrooms appeared to be newly resurbished and were again spotless. Nice toiletries together with huge fluffy towels were a pleasant surprise.
Beds were also comfortable and clean, lovely Sony flatscreen TV and free wifi completed the package.
Evening meal in the restaurant was pretty good 'pub fayre' and the staff were poliet and helpful at all times.
Breakfast was also delicious - cooked freshly to order with the usual range of cerials & fruits etc.
All in all a perfect place to stay when travelling to Hampshire from the North - less than 2 mins off the A34, couldn't be easier to find.
Highly recommended.

Lets start ticking the boxes - ample parking, good location, attentitive staff, lovely food, decent bar, clean room.

A little bit of a strange layout but what else can you expect from an old inn, the rooms were scattered around the property, even in separate buildings at the rear. Nice size beer garden and the BBQ food looked lovely. Room was good, nothing flashy just your standard fayre but had all the necessitites that was required - TV, towels, shower, comfy bed and decent curtains that actually block out morning sunshine after a heavy night at the bar. The bar staff were tremendous, never tiring and always serving!

Evening food was fabulous, good variety and service was great. A lot of small hotels should take advice from this one on how to recruit pleasant and hard working staff. (even the housemaids were incredibly good looking!) Breakfast was hearty and the jolly staff eased me from my cloudy headed hangover, it's nice to have a smile with your eggs! If you're booking a group in, give them a call and see what discounts you can get, they were very helpful with our reservation requirements.

If you don't need to be directly in Newbury, this is the one.

Room was shabby, musty and beds were damp, springs protruding through mattress. Door into room was not completely secure and we do not have anything nice to say about the staff.
