“Downton Abbey more like Rundown Abbey”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

I visited Highclere Castle with my Mother, via a coach trip, I must say i have seen a lot better stately homes.
We went in to the Egyption Exhibition that took 5 minutes not much to see everone's cramped in small dark rooms so dark that you could not see the items which where not even real a plastic mummy. staff are very up them selves instead of doing their job's.

We then went on into house took 10 minutes about 5 rooms worth seeing the rest you just had to look through the door was one narrow staircase. 1940's furniture nothing posh, ripped seat covers wallpaper hanging off and cracked and it looked like it had not seen a sheen of polish in years and smelt fouisty.

The gardens are worth seeing but not very well sign posted for directions and not enough flowers shrubs i would not pay for this.

The cafe's 3 of them very small where not run very good lack of seating area trays of pots pilling up and when the foreign woman did come to take the pots she was taking away my mother pot of tea which i only just bought and the seats where coverd in pots £6.00 for a Chicken salad box, £1.65 for a can no propper food. I would advise taking a packed lunch instead but i'll never go back.

“A must see for all Downton Abbey Devotees!”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

We found the grounds of Highclere to be amazing with rolling hills, gardens, bleating sheep and acres of pastoral scenes. The tea and scones were a pleasant refreshment and the gift shop was affordable and offered many mementos of our visits. The Castle itself is resplendent with history, art, and furnishings! This is a must do if you are a Downton Abbey fan! What a thrill it was to walk down the grand staircase! There are docents in every room to answer questions and the crowds were minimal inside. Highly recommend.

“Lots of rooms are open so it was good value”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

We stopped off at Highlere Castle on our way back from the south coast thinking for some reason we knew the name so would give it a visit. When we drove up the drive we realised it was where Downton Abbey is filmed - and we're fans lol. Luckily for us it was open as it was the bank holiday - it's only open on selected dates so check their website - and reasonably priced at £11 for adults.
We spent a couple of hours in the castle and walking round the grounds - there were a lot more rooms open than we expected as often only a handful are open to the public, especially when they're still the home of an Earl and Countess (lots of family photos are displayed which was nice). It was good to be able to go in the rooms they used for filming like the dining room and library.
If you enjoy Downton or stately homes then it's worth a visit.

“Great day out”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

Just back from Highclere castle, (Downton Abbey), The grounds are beautiful, the castle is just like what you see on television, we are big fans, the rooms looked smaller, but what an experience,
had coffee and cake in the tea rooms, just lovely.

What a delight to see this beautiful stately home. The grounds are stunning and the tour through the house was fascinating, brought all the memories of Downton flooding back !
Knowledgeable guides and a very relaxed feel to everything.
