I was staying here on business for 2 nights. Each night cost over £100, which - at the time of bookking - seemed ok for a 4 star hotel.
The hotel looks nice from the outside, and in a quiet location. However, as soon as you walk in, all pretense is shattered. The whole place needs refurbishing. The reception person was unwelcoming and didn't even tell me where my room was - leaving me to wander all over the hotel (crossing her path several times). Eventually I asked her where it was and she said it was in a separate building! Thanks for that!
The room itself was an old-school Alan Partridge-style affair - complete with curtain pelmets, crap TV, powdered coffee, lumpy bed, yellowed walls and that stale 'hotel aroma' which implies a lick of paint has been a long time coming.
The shower was weak, but functional. And one of the towels had brown stains on it.
Finally, and crucially for me - the internet did not work using the (not free) modem/cable in the room. As this was a work trip - having access was utterly paramount. The staff didn't seem bothered, and I could see other people complaining, but getting no answers. In the end I had to miss dinner to actually go back to the office at 9pm, which was a nightmare. I got back to my room at midnight with a KFC (the only place still open) and a massive grump.
A diconcerting experience.
If it was advertised as a no-frills 2/3 star room for 50 quid, then I wouldn't be moaning like this, but for a £110 4 star hotel I feel ripped off. I have just got back from a trip to Chicago, where a 4 star hotel cost less, and involved a beautiful free-standing bath overlooking the city, a mini-bar, an espresso maker, a wet room and free whiskey. Either standards are completely different across the pond, or this hotel needs to reclassified.
