“Absolutely amazing”

The atmosphere is amazing. It was a rainy day and the fire was lit and created a very cost feeling. The food is stunning and Marcello gave 1st class service and was very friendly. Would highly recommend!

“high marks for position + atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Chose this pub based on its location which was ideal for us, being close to M4. Reserved a table for Sunday lunch, which was wise as they appeared to be pretty full. On arrival, was struck by the cosy fire, the numerous candles everywhere and the live piano music. It all looked wonderful and I was delighted with another 'Tripadvisor-inspired' choice. However, personally-speaking, I felt disappointed by the food. Choice was limited and from information on the website, I'd been expecting much more variety. As for the wine, I didn't see any prices (another reviewer mentioned it's pricy), but it tasted delicious.

“Simply the best, better than all the rest !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Locals living in the vicinity of West Berkshire's A4 between Newbury and Hungerford are spoiled with this Gastropub. And the food is certainly worth the travel for those who live outside or happen to be looking here on Trip Advisor for somewhere to stop off at while travelling for a meal- and people do. This site has always been a pub since the mid 1800's and was re-named the Halfway (Inn) situated halfway between Newbury and Hungerford, Halfway between London and Bristol although the Inn part of the name was dropped more recently.

The attraction is the combination of soothing ambient, set with low lighting, a glowing fire and the warm glow from an array of candles. So instantly welcoming and throughout the visit it was always almost 1948.
Friendly and hospital staff, well kept lager with a selection of Badger ales and bottled cider along with a menu not overly complicated.A place that somewhat makes one proud to be British.

I had the goats cheese salad starter and my companion had the Scallops served on a bed of pea risotto, both opting for the Chicken breast supreme for our mains.
If I was the chicken I would be ever so pleased to discover that I gave my life to finish in a dish so perfectly prepared. Condolences to the chicken.
The desserts were tempting , and although now both full from the generous portions they were too tempting to pass. We ordered two desserts to share . The lemon tarte was fresh and the “jolt” of lemon in every bite is incredible. You almost question whether or not its made from some super-distilled extract, though the natural flavour of the juice and zest of the lemons reassures you that you’re eating the real thing. And then there’s the colour. Using farm-fresh free-range egg yolks, the natural deep yellow colour was stunning!! The banoffee pie was also a delight! Our bill came to £90 with tip and many drinks, and a three course meal each- great value for money.
All in all a fantastic evening. Well done to James and Magdalena and Marcin for the wonderful evening. We will be back soon !

“Great (and often locally supplied) food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

A simple menu done very well - and when I asked about my food I was told it was locally sourced, which is a very nice touch. Lovely ambience. Not to mention great wine - although it's really rather dear by the glass so would recommend a bottle.

“Food fine, table too cramped”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

Food was fine, good Sunday roast lunch. The main problem was that we were 6 and the table really only big enough for 4. I was sat across the corner just to get my legs in. The roast beef was very tasty but too grisly and chewy, and it was cut too thick. The roast pork was excellent. Overall an average experience that worked well for some ofour party but not others.
