“Good location, friendly staff BUT needs improving”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

Clarence Gardens is in a great location with wonderful views over the bay. It is within easy walking distance to the cricket ground, Peasholme Park, town centre and the harbour beach area. Paula welcomed us on our arrival and was really friendly and helpful.

We stayed in room 27 which is on the 3rd floor looking away from the sea. The lift only goes as far as the second floor which was OK for us but worth noting. We were informed of this by e-mail before our arrival which I thought was good practice. We thought the room was looking a little tired with old fashioned furniture and the pillows were hard. As seems to be the case nowadays the hotel was too warm which meant we did not get a good night's sleep. Opening the windows helped with the temperature but let in the sound of squawking seagulls. The en-suite room was small and we could not get any hot water from the shower although the water in the sink taps was almost too hot. In fact the water from the cold water tap was a bit warm for brushing teeth. We mentioned this on departure and were offered an apology but no money back.

At £51.95 for room only, I thought this property was over priced. In future I'll stick with budget hotel chains when booking an overnight stay at the seaside.

Room Tip: The lift doesn't go to the top floor so if you have any mobility problems you need to specify th...

We only had the one night here and found the room (complete with sea view) to be adequate with a very comfortable bed. There was tea/coffee making in the room and a wonderful view. The room is well decorated, be it a little old fashioned, as well as nice and clean. The proprietor's Paula and Paul are very welcoming and kean to be of any help they can.
If you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel on the sea front in Scarborough this friendly family hotel could suit you well.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are nice & quiet

We booked this hotel 2 days before we travelled and got a family room for £50 (breakfast not included). On arrival we were warmly greeted by the owner Paul and parked our car right outside the hotel. I spent 1 night in this hotel, which was child friendly (nintendo wii + pool table in a room next to the bar). The bedroom had a great view over looking the North bay and Castle, the room was slightly dated but very clean and once the heater was put on nice and cosy. At the end of the day if you only spend £50 a night you are not going to get a 5 star room, however we would definitely consider stopping here again for a night or two. The hotel is very conveniently situated close to all of Scarborough's attractions and there are number of restaurants within walking distance. The open top bus service also stops nearby. We cannot comment on the breakfast as we didn't choose to have one in the hotel but went to a nice little cafe round the corner. Enjoyed Paul's company in the bar area with a nice pint and again a nice sea view, very relaxing. Also free wi-fi on site (which my son William enjoyed!).

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

Outstanding!!!! Paul and Paul made us feel so at home. Hubby got his birthday wish; a view of sea with quality surroundings. When we first booked there were no sea view rooms available; when we arrived we were given the room directly over the bay, beautiful. Thank you thank you thank you. Stay nowhere else!!

I really enjoyed my two-night stay here. It was very relaxing, we were made to feel very welcome in a most genuine manner and even the budget rooms offer better facilities than some much larger hotels. Nice little bar area and games room and a very good atmosphere within the place. From what I saw it looked ideal for families.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms offer great views of the North Bay

Spent 2 nights in this hotel in January so got a really good price, The owners Paula and Paul are really lovely people so I hate being negative. Pictures of the rooms on the website impressed me but found the room I got very different but I can forgive that as I got the sea view I requested.
Didn't sleep to well as the pillows were like bricks, I would never expect a person to sleep on a bed or pillow that I wouldn't myself sleep on. Shocked when I saw the breakfast room as once again the photographs were very deceiving, they say a camera never lies but I am not so sure on this occassion. Very dissapointed with breakfast for what it costs, only one sausage, one rasher of bacon, one egg and a very small pot with beans, oh and a piece of fried bread that I couldnt eat as It was very oily, annoyed because as we walked around Scarborough we saw lots of cafe's doing fantastic looking breakfasts for as little as £2.95. Can't complain about cleanliness as the room and bathroom was spotless and I would probably return if I got the room at the cheap price but I would not bother with the breakfast as I know now that you can get better and cheaper just around the corner.

Room Tip: The highest rooms are small but quite and have a sea view.
