“Excellent food, ambience and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2014

Had fancied trying this restaurant for a few months but some of the reviews were of some concern.
We needn't have worried as our first instincts were correct. Welcome warm and friendly, premises excellent, ordering and service excellently handled ( owner was great ) and food was exceptional.
I had the scallops and black pudding followed by scampi both of which are particular favourites and they were exceptional. My wife had mackerel pate and turbot with figs both of which were first rate. Good wine list at sensible prices. Overall cannot fault and will be back.

“Fish-Tastic Treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2014

We walked in here on impulse, about 9pm on Saturday night, yesterday. The menu placed outside said all the right things to us, having at least 3 or 4 meals we could each easily have settled on. The price range gave us that 'comfortable' confidence that we should be in for a treat, as it extended up beyond our reach yet left loads to choose from in the mid-price bracket we were looking at.

Our only reservation about entering was the fact our smarter clothes were back in the hotel and we were in our beach scruffs, having spent most of the day bar-hopping the seafront. The restaurant was pretty full with rather more presentable clientele than our weatherbeaten tattood selves, and I had doubts that my 3 day beard and distinct cider aroma was going to parlor favor from the greeting attendants. No worries here though, we were certainly made welcome from the minute we entered, through to our reluctant goodbyes, and attentively serviced throughout the course of our meal.

We were seated in the waiting area with a couple that had finished dining and were awaiting their taxi, and saw great rapport between staff and customer - they were obviously regulars and highly satisfied with their own experience that night. Another couple in there had arrived just prior to us, and were being given a very impressive tour of the menu by a clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic waitress. A hesitant inquiry about 'sharing meals' (shock! horror!) was met with friendly and laid-back positive encouragement. The Specials looked amazing and we will return one day to sample them. We made & re-made several combinations of meal from our menu whilst shamelessly earwigging the choices of others...

Everything just went so smoothly! We were seated quickly, at a lovely table in a light, airy & very pleasant room. The ambience was great, a healthy buzz of happy chatter and even happier scoffing, service was perfect, music just right, the whole experience just clicked, really.

Straight away we were brought our choice of wine, it was 'just' the second-cheapest on the list - Chardonnay - but really is a cracking bottle and great value for money. Also we were served with some delicious herby ciabatta (super fresh, at 9pm?, you bet!) and a pot of the most addictive homemade aioli we've ever tasted. Could have eaten a soup bowl of it, given enough dipping material... This adorable bread 'starter' was not charged for when we received our bill - such a nice touch, at the restaurants expense and greatly appreciated by ourselves!

Our main-course-only orders arrived in no time, and were placed perfectly with sharing in mind. The on-plate presentation showed care and attention to detail. The salad was way more than a garnish, it was a mini-meal in itself, deserving of its' own spotlight. Absolutely every element of our meals was first class, top drawer, faultless. We had Seafood St Jacques that appeared to be forthcoming from a magical self-filling vessel - I swear that little seafood plant-pot was truly bottomless. Lobster, crab, cockles, muscles - Lord the muscles were divine - cream, scallops, squid... Great choice that one! Our second-sharer was the simply described Proper Scampi. Oh aye, it were proper. Proper probably the best prawns I've had in my time, and that's a fair old few. Proper job well done.

The final bill was under £40 for a great feast of perfectly cooked, presented and served food & well selected wine, in a fantastic setting. The staff that night were brilliant - totally unobtrusive other than being in exactly the right place at the right time with the right response. No mysterious service charge, no charge for bread/aioli that would be 3 or 4 quid in a third-rate pizzeria and about 10 percent the quality...

So, Cafe Fish, let me make you a promise that lives up to your own high standards - we'll be back, maybe with our evening attire and a hint of a shave about myself, and we'll make sure it's for 'the works' even if we have to starve ourselves for 24 hours upfront - well worth it!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2014

we arrived early evening for our meal and was lucky to be served promptly if you go by other reviews, explained we wanted the seafood platter and the manager was happy to explain the various ways of how we could have each course that was until we said we had a groupon voucher he was not very happy and made it perfectly clear! the waitress we had was excellent and the food absolutely delicious but would i have paid £80 for it? No it was worth the £39 we paid but not much more the portion size is small. great chef great waitress shame the management let them down

“Great food. Great staff. Rude manager. ”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2014 via mobile

This was our first time here and we were really looking forward to it. On arrival we were asked to order our drinks in the bar whilst waiting for our table. We were given a menu to look at. 2 minutes later the manager returned to take our order. We'd not even looked at it. He immediately got huffy saying they were very busy and he'd need to give the menu to someone else! Had he explained we needed to order before taking our seats we'd have played the game. We'd still have wanted slightly longer to look at the menu though! Maybe he could treat himself to buying a few more menus. We then ordered and again he got shirty when we didn't want a starter. "The food will take about 45 minutes you know as you're each having something different". Yes mate, we fully expect you to cook the food before serving it. Not bragging, but we've dined out before!!

Fortunately the manager leaves you once you're seated, presumably as he does not trust other members of his team to provide the warm welcome...

I have to say that the rest of the team are great; warm, friendly and also have the good grace to cringe when you enquire about the owner's attitude. The food was delicious too. Very reasonably priced.

Unfortunately the start to the evening means I would not recommend this place. The staff and chef I would highly recommend though. The solution here is clear, time to become a non-present manager, and use the money saved on a manager salary to buy a couple more menus :-p

“Didn't reach the standard that the reviews implied”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2014

Booked a table for 7.30, arrived a little early and was shown to the bar area. The owner was expaining to customers what options were available, by the time he got to us we had decided what we wanted for our starter and main coarse. It seemed that the owner had lost interest in us and wandered off to talk to somebody who was obviously a good friend of his, I had to go and tell him what wine we wanted. The wife had Thai for a starter and found it below average, I had oysters. For the main coarse my wife had the prawns and I had lobster, if it had been any smaller it would have passed as a cray fish. We didn't want to have a desert. I am guessing that the manager was embarrassed at the size of the lobster as the bill was reduced.
