Been here several times. Always busy and short staffed but always manage to make you welcome and find a table for you. Good Italian food with a good choice of blackboard specials also. Nothing too much trouble. Nice to be served by actual Italians! Would recommend a visit.

We came in at about 7.30pm after trying to find seats in several other nearby restaurants so I felt lucky to get a table here. I should have realised there was a reason it wasn't full.
The service was almost comically bad. Highlights included the waitress not being able to tell us which wines were available by the glass, ridiculously long waits to order and then for food to arrive, plates brought out of the kitchen and offered around to see which table they were for, other tables' meals brought out in random order compared to the order they were ordered in, a lad in jumper and jeans being shown the way to the kitchen who then turned out to be a waiter, a half-hour wait for our bill which then turned out to be the wrong one, and to cap it all the credit card machine find' t work properly.
On the plus side, one of the main courses (penette with salmon) was fantastic and the portions were huge.

Previous visits over 5+ years always very good but two visits this year (May and August) both very poor indeed. Visit on August Bank Holiday especially poor - we were herded into the back of the restaurant with candles unlit, music switched off, lighting on full and just in time to watch the specials board being wiped clean (despite it having been sat in the window all day). The manager who usually greets diners was cooking rather than the regular chef and he duly served up a bizarre starter of sliced duck on an iceberg lettuce leaf, soup with no bread (and a sarcastic response from the waiter when the lack of bread was queried - apparently a garlic bread served to another diner is an appropriate accompaniment to minestrone soup), fatty, overcooked lamb with balsamic vinegar and a dessert which had clearly been sat in a fridge for days and had congealed. Really, really unpleasant and after several years of loyal custom, we won't be going back.

everything started off so well when i rang this restaurant at 6.10pm to book a table for 7.30pm. We arrived at 7.15 and were shown to our table at 7.25 from then on it descended to farce.
the head waiter?owner? (small italian man with long hair) dissapeared for 30 minutes with no staff seen except the bar girl. then we eventually had our order taken at 8.00pm we then were left to wait a further 30 minutes for our starter. We finally got our main course at 8.55 and had to ask repeatedly for new cutlery, dressing for the salad, more drinks, the dessert menu and someone to eventually take our dessert order, finally finishing the meal at 9.50 without coffee and we did'nt want to wait any longer. When i went to pay the meal there was a embarrasing 2 minutes when the head waiter/owner lanbasted the bar girl in front of me for not adding the bill up correctly . the bill came to over £70.00 and when i complained about the terrible service and asked if he would knock something off the bill i was told that he was embarrased by the night but would'nt knock anything off the bill as it would come out of his money, he also refused my request to speak to the owner (i think it was him) and would'nt give me his name and threatened me with the police if i did'nt pay the bill in full. A perfect way to not treat customers so beware this might on a good day be a good restaurant but on a bad day its rubbish and you will still be expected to pay in full even if you receive a poor experience.
ps the food in general when we received it was generally good except the pannacotta which was tiny and dried up and came with a melon boat? which i assume was to fill the plate up.

Generally I wouldn't be one to scoff at £30 for 3 courses with a side, however 2 out of 4 being *pretty* bad is inspiring a review. Not sure how all of the flavour (one part due to the chilli and the other due to the cooking process used) and nutrition can be cooked out of spinach but there it is. The second course which doesn't disappoint but full blown irritation is the dessert. Panna cotta clearly from the fridge from several days prior, complete with a gelatinous disc of creamy goo at the bottom was frankly, disgusting. A smear of "monkeys blood" as an excuse for a sauce, is less than palatable. Ordinarily I would happily pay upwards of £8 for a good dessert, honestly this made me want to not pay for the ENTIRE meal. Make sure the place is busy when you go, as an indication that the chef and NOT the front of house, is doing the cooking.
