Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names. Access: The SJT provides regular captioned and audio described performances and has infrared and induction loop systems. There is level access to the Box Office and disabled toilets, a wheelchair lift to the Shop and a passenger lift giving access to all floors. There are designated wheelchair spaces in both theatres, which are easily accessible from the lift. Please notify the Box Office at the time of booking if you require wheelchair access. Access to some seats in The Round and The McCarthy is via steps, please advise staff when booking if you have any specific seating requirements.

“could have been better”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

on holiday me and my wife used both the cinema and the theatre during our visit to Scarborough. The cinema was good value at 7 pounds each and was nice and clean. I picked my Tickets up from the box office with no problems. The drinks in the Restaurant are on the expensive side. We used the Theatre side on the Wednesday to see The Last Train To Scarborough. Its the first time we had been to a proper theatre production and we really enjoyed it. Whilst the staff are really polite and helpful the facilities are a let down. only one set of toilets to serve a place as big as it is particularly during a 15 minute interval is inadequate.

“Excellent Production”

A somewhat dark tale with a nice blend of humour, and very well performed.Would not be everybodys cup of tea,but I thoroughly enjoyed it in front of what was virtually a full house.

“If u love Theatre you MUST see a play here - it's a marvellous experience to see it in the round.”
Reviewed May 29, 2014 via mobile

When I take friends to Scarborough I also book seats for whatever play is on at The Stephen Joseph and we have never been disappointed. It's a great experience from arriving and looking round the interesting shop, then having a pre show drink in the comfortable bar, then the play - always a lovely evening.

“How lucky the Scarborough people are”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

This is a fantastic little theatre which shows some amazing productions and has been used over the years to premier new works by Alan Ayckbourne before they move to the west end. Go you wont regret it.

“Excellent production”
Reviewed May 26, 2014

Taste of Honey was brilliantly staged and acted. Interesting to be in the UKs first theatre in the round.
