Owner description: The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names. Access: The SJT provides regular captioned and audio described performances and has infrared and induction loop systems. There is level access to the Box Office and disabled toilets, a wheelchair lift to the Shop and a passenger lift giving access to all floors. There are designated wheelchair spaces in both theatres, which are easily accessible from the lift. Please notify the Box Office at the time of booking if you require wheelchair access. Access to some seats in The Round and The McCarthy is via steps, please advise staff when booking if you have any specific seating requirements.

Very nice and well kept. Staff helpful and informative. Well situated for travell being right outside the train station and a taxi company. Staff knowledge of local area very good and so helpful the theatre very clean and the staff should be proud that they keep such a high standard and ensure the customers experience is second to none. Well done your a credit,

I loved this place, the layout brings the public closer to the play.
The architecture is 1920's or 30's

We chose this show from a possible three whilst staying in the area for two weeks and were not disappointed. The talents of this company continue to amaze and delight audiences everywhere. If you get a chance to see A Government Inspector don't miss it! The original play by Nikolai Gogol has been skilfully adapted by Deborah McAndrew and succeeds effortlessly in updating the Russian political intrigue to a Yorkshire setting. As a touring production, it must have been a challenge to adapt to the Theatre in the Round but it worked well. The cast demonstrated their theatrical talents to the maximum with much doubling of characters, swift costume changes, dancing and musical interludes as a brass band. It seems almost unfair to single out any performer, but Jon Trenchard as Snapper really was a delight! The energy he brought to the part was impressive. We will look forward to seeing him and others new to Northern Broadsides in further productions.
