“Mediocre - Sometimes the friendly staff isn't just enough..”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

We just stayed in this hotel for one night. It cost us £125.00 for the night, which I found a bit expensive for a 3 star hotel, but receiving the hotel’s brochure I was optimistic. It offered high quality bedrooms, with nice interior and smiling people on the pictures. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case, very misleading. As I have never before had to go in a hotel room and check for danger, as we stepped in our room I left my 3 year old to explore it. First thing that happened was that she burnt her arm on the piping hot towel radiator that’s right next to the toilet (not very hygienic, as it wasn’t very high on the wall ) and it cannot be turned off as it is wired in to a socket. There was a small sticker on the wall “caution hot” but I don’t have a child prodigy, she can’t read at the age of 3. The cables were stuck to the wall by parcel tape, and the walls were yellow and cracked. The room smelt fusty and it looked like it’s not been decorated for well over 15 years. The very old-fashioned sash window was rattling all night as it was windy, and the beds were very uncomfortable. The breakfast was a let down. I wouldn’t have mind all of this if it wouldn’t have cost us £125.00 Sure, the response will be “Why didn’t you come down to reception and complain…” and then what would have happened? You would have apologised and that would have been more or lest it. I don’t think we’ll stay here again.

We have been visiting this hotel for around 30 years. Initially having a young child the proximity to the South Cliff lift and the beach was appealing, and the facility of the swimming pool in the hotel's basement for rainy days was a big plus. We now repeat the exercise with the grandchild. Over the years the service - with a smile - has never wavered. We have seen three owners ... The latest undertook a period of refurbishment and the rooms are spotless, with brilliant sea views on the front, spacious rooms, and coffee available, and digital tv too. Nothing is too much trouble. Criticisms? Well the pool area needs a bit of TLC but I am sure this will be included in the continuing refurbishment programme - we used it on this visit and it is clean and cared for, just needs sprucing up. We have visited twice this year - early May and mid August. If time permits we will visit gain before Christmas.

Room Tip: Ask for room with sea view - you pay a little extra but it is well worth it.

I would recommend this hotel. It is located in a quiet area, with sea views if you are willing to pay a little extra. The beach lift is close by giving easy access to the beach and promenade. One of our party was not able to walk great distances, and the hotel kindly lent us a wheelchair, which made a big difference to our weekend. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Breakfast was served at the table, rather than buffet style, which meant a civilised start to the morning. Breakfast was well presented and well cooked. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. All in all, a very satisfactory experience. My husband used the pool and had it to himself. We booked our room through Laterooms so paid a little less, so we weren't surprised to get a room at the back of the hotel looking over the bins, etc. But, we did have a jacuzzi bath which we didn't expect.

Room Tip: Pay extra if you want a sea view. The rooms with the bay windows are considerably larger.

My husband and i went away for our anniversary for 2 nights to the Red Lea. The staff were very friendly and we had been upgraded to a sea view room which was very clean and more than adequate. The hotel was very clean in all areas and in a very good location. We ate in the restaurant on the saturday and the food was very good my only quibble is that i like to eat about 8 to 8.30 but although it says last sitting at 7.30 this is not really true as when we tried to book for 7.30 we were asked to be there before 7.10. I would like to comment on the wardrobe situation , no the wardrobe is not very deep but if you just tilt the hangers slightly it is perfectly fine and the wardrobe closes and i do not see what the problem is. Over all this is a very nice hotel and the staff are excellent.

My husband and I have just been staying at this hotel with a coach party. I was a bit worried after reading some of the more negative reviews,so was pleasantly surprised. Our twin room was comfortable, although at the rear of the hotel,so no good views. Also true that the wardrobe was not deep enough to accomodate the hangers.Apart from these minor details ,the evening entertainment was excellent with lots of laughs and the chef deserves to be mentioned because all of our meals were really enjoyable and beautifuuly cooked. The bar staff and reception were really friendly and efficient. The hotel is situated right opposite the cliff lift,so the beach is readily accessible to anybody. what more could you want??

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have better views and I imagine would be larger.

My husband and I went away for our Anniversary weekend to the Red Lea. The location was very good as you could get onto beach or do some shopping in town. Food was average but staff where excellent and could not have been more helpful. We stayed two nights in room 216, lovely big and spacious room with a lovely sea view. First day we got there we went down to the pool which is on the small side there was a hot tub but it was not up and running which was slightly disapointing.
