The receptionist would not let us check in before 3pm. But her colleague checked in other guests at 1450 hours. Beware of this female receptionist who seems to think she owns English Rose Hotels. Room had a sea view BUT requested a room near my wife's mother who is 94 years old. The allocated rooms were on the 4TH FLOOR. How could a hotel get this so wrong to put an elderly person on the TOP floor. She was 30 yards away and the telephone in her room did not work until we got it changed. BUT in our room there was a single bed in a separate room. Why did they not tell us this?. Our towels were not changed all of our holiday. The pillowcase was torn. The sheet had stains on it. The wardrobe had bits of wood to level it off with the floor. The bathroom was cleanly tiled and looked almost new. Our decorations were OK but those in the mother-in-laws needed doing. Sat at same table in dining room for breakfast until last morning when there was a note 'reserved for rooms 106/127' How dare they do this BUT then again they were in better rooms!!!!. We did not move tables and simply removed the note which did not please the waitress. On leaving when we paid for the car parking the SAME receptionist did not have the courtesy to ask us if we had a pleasant stay. Good job she did not. We have written to English Rose Hotels to express our disappointment with them. So be warned. Hotel was almost full with 2 coach loads of people. You share the same dining room and food.

Yet another family gathering at the Clifton and dispite the negative reviews some people send in I still think it is very good value, clean and warm with good food.
some people seem to want five star for two star prices

Went here for the weekend with family
Plus points: Staff really friendly and helpful, food good
Minus Points: Room was extremely shabby (although fairly clean), looked like it hadn't been updated for years, If I had gone to a european hotel I would have been livid, but it seems the british hotel trade seem to think this is acceptable.
Car parking a joke, you have to pay £10 a night for a space, and it's tiny so if you don't pay you don't get a space.
One to avoid I'm afraid. Shame really as it is in a great spot but it's way below minimum standard even a budget traveller would expect. Goodness knows what foreign travellers think of the UK if this is the standard of hotel !!!
I'm told that the hotel is in the process of being updated, but you have to pay extra for an 'upgraded' room, great eh?, pay more or get a room that resembles a hostel.
Also it advertises Wifi, but they don't have it, something to bear in mind if you need to do any work.

the main reason we stayed here was due to the car parking facilities as most hotels in that area dont have private car parking. The bedroom (371) was very small for a double room and the bathroom was like a filthy caravan bathroom. There were hairs on the bathroom floor, no plug hole cover for the shower so you could see a build up of hair, mould on the tiles etc, and the bed was very hard & small, the pillows were like bricks and had no mattress protector!!!!! Breakfast was a shambles, we ordered fruit & pasteries that never arrived after 30mins so we left. Spoke to the duty manager and he moved us to a better room but said "its the maids last weekend working so shes not going to do a good job" regarding breakfast and the waiter that was supposed to get us our order he said "hes a student and not thick, he must of forgot about it". The next morning for breakfast the waiter who "forgot" apologised and got our order from the previous morning, Until a rude abrupt waitress named "Jill" said we couldnt have it as it was on the continential breakfast! spoke to the restaurant manager who told us he had been on holiday for 2wks and the breakfast menu was new and blaming head office as its not explained properly on the menu. As a paying customer i dont need these "excuses" its not my problem. All in all i didnt receive any compensation just moved to a better room but only for the 1 night as it was a 2 night stay!!

We just got back from a two night stay at the Clifton, We paid £60 per room per night, which included breakfast.
The room was lovely, very spacious, with bay windows and seats over looking the sea. The bed was comfortable and the sheets clean and fresh. The bathroom was OK, A bit tired, but the bath was big enough for two.
As a couple in our thirties we noticed that this Hotel seemed to attract mainly pensioners, and it was like stepping back into a time warp. The lift was really old fashioned but we loved it. Every time I got in it I imagined at one time it would have had a porter stood there.
Breakfast was served in the ballroom, and the staff were professional and attentive. The food was fine, no problems other than on the first morning it was a little cold.
The only problem we did find was with the parking. When we rang up to book we asked if there was a car park which was important to us and they said yes, with no mention of having to reserve spots. When we got there we found that most of them were reserved. We luckily found a spot that hadnt been reserved but the next morning when we had to go out in the car and when we got back we found our spot had been sold to the highest bidder! There is no other place to park in the area without being miles away and paying a fortune. So we had to park on the car park in a funny position in a ditch, but then in our room we couldnt relax because we were worried about the car. The fact that most of the spots were reserved but no one actually in them at all really was annoying. Some were empty for over 24 hours! I really think the hotel should stop this get rich quick scheme and just treat it on a first come first served basis.
The location of the hotel was good, it was on the north bay, but there was an open top bus which you could get from outside the hotel up to the south bay. Although it wasnt too far to walk.
All in all the value for money was fine and we would probably use the hotel again if we had to.

Extremely tired, shabby and out of date. The sheets were well laundered but the remainder of the bedding you wouldn't let your grandmother use.
Thread bare carpets, windows stuffed with tissues (to help keep drafts out) flaky paint, stained ceilings, coffee stains on the coffee table and toothpaste in the washbasin. Not a welcoming sight !!

Food was much like school dinners. I required the vegetarian option. These were a nutritional disaster and could well have been accompanied by a governement health warning.

I went to this hotel to try an organised 'dance' holiday with a group of friends. The ballroom was comandeered by other groups and we were assigned a committee room. Once again this was very shabby and had about as much ambience as a nissan hut.

On the positive side the staff were courteous, friendly and were as helpful as they could be.

Booked a 2 night DBB deal at this hotel & upgraded to a superior double room with sea view (recommend paying the extra) with Travelzoo. Magnificent deal on room. The weather over the 2 dys was better than the Med. Although the sea was a lot colder !!!

We looked right over the north bay which was fantastic.(exactly what we needed
Enormous double bed
Sitting area & a sitting area in front of the large bay window. Just perfect to enjoy a cold beer.
Large bathroom, which was a wee bit tired, but perfectly acceptable.
The food in the hotel was perfectly acceptable both for dinner & breakfast.
The drink was very reasonable for hotel.
Fantastic location & ood walking areas around and about.
I last came to Scarborough around 35+ years ago & I can't wait to go back & would definitely use this hotel.

If you plan to sit in a hotel for the whole of your holiday, then this one is probably not for you. But if you want clean, comfy & great value, then you won't get much better than this.

Thanks to all the friendly staff at the hotel.
