“Fantastic views in a quiet location.”
Reviewed October 11, 2009

The views across North Bay are stunning, and if you're lucky enough to get a sea view room you can spend hours staring out at the castle and the sea. The room was well furnished and comfortable. There was plenty of tea and coffee and the bathroom was spotless. It is a little further away form the town than I expected, but it was so quiet and peaceful. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and always make time for each individual guest. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back in the future.

The Clifton Hotel looks like a smart luxurious hotel on its website. The prices are what you would normally pay for a good hotel therefore we thought this would be a safe option for an autumn weekend in Scarborough. However, we were very wrong.
We booked two rooms, a single and a double with sea views and paid the additional £5 for a reserved parking space totaling £170 for 1 night. The ignorant excuse for a human being who greeted us at the reception upon arrival was unbelievably rude. I asked him if he would confirm that the rooms allocated to us had a sea view he replied "Did you book a sea view?" when I replied "yes" there was no further communication other than sign here, here and here. Our room was on the top floor; however the window looked onto the scaffolding that had been erected at the front of the building. The ceiling had damp patches from roof leaks; generally the room smelled fusty and was very small for a double room. We returned to the reception to ask if we could change our room but the hotel had a weekend block booking from a dance school and there were no more rooms with sea views. Credit where credit is due, the girl on reception was very polite and understanding. The grouch we met earlier on reception had disappeared onto the car park to pick an argument with other arriving guests. Trying not to be too dis-heartened we decided to give the hotel bar a try. When we eventually found the bar person who was doubling up as kitchen help due to staff shortages, we thought it might be a good idea to order some food. Another bad idea, as this was going to be too much trouble for the puffing and blowing bar person, plus the food was nothing to write home about. Breakfast was adequate but very little choice. Positives are that the scaffolding was for painting the outside of the building which is a good start to decorating a very tired looking hotel. Generally, hotel is in need of a large hotel group investor to refurbish everything and to train the staff and management in day to day customer service.
The Hotel has vast potential but that’s about it.

Our room was AWFUL. Dirty, shabby and missing furniture. Requested another room and was told there was no chance by a manager with bad attitude. Would never, never , never stay here again.

where to start , we arrived around 9pm in the evening the receptionist was freindly , when we walked up the stairs i had the feeling of this is not going to be a nice stay, the hallways were grim and gloomy as if it was a old folks home , the clifton is is bad need of a restoration and new carpets to say the least, the room and the floor we was in was slopy not flat the floor boards creakled n cracxked as we walked over them, what a lovelly bathroom i thought cant wait for a shower ha ha ha, i went to the wardrobe which had bits of wood under it to stop it from falling over i opend the door , and which to my suprise the door came open and i was left holding the door knob in my hand, typical i thought, after we went out and had supper i was lookin forward to a nice comfy nights rest, the bed was like sleeping on solid wood so uncomfyy and even the bed was on a slope, i had abiout 3 hours kip the first night great i thought ill not wnat to go walkin in the morning , i got up and went for a shower the tiles were cracked in places the shower was nice but as i grabbed the towel , the towel rail came flying with it and landed on the floor, do not stop at this hotel it is not worth the money and i wished id never booked it ill never ever book there again

I stayed at the clifton in august with my boyfriend, and to be honest we were terrified about what was going to greet us when we arrived at the hotel after reading all the awful reviews on here! But we were actually pleasently suprised! Sure it's a very outdated (the carpets on the stairs were worn through to the tread) and with a bit of work and some paintwork inside & most definatly on the outside The Clifton Hotel could be a fantastic hotel!!! It's got a brilliant lay out.

We slept in and missed our breakfast so can't comment on the food or anything. But the room was nice, clean. It had everything we needed for a nice weekend break. The only problem I really had was with the moody people working on reception who looked at you like you were stupid everytime you asked a question.

But if I'm honest I won't be going back, for what you get it is very over priced. I'd just go stay at the new travelodge or one of the smaller B&B's on the front. We saw a few when we were there so we've already chosen our next hotel for our return to the seaside.

Me and my partner stayed in this hotel mid august and found it not as bad as the reviews made out.The hotel staff were friendly and our room was clean and spacious. There are 2 bars which we didnt go to.The clifton has a sister hotel "the royal hotel" situated at the other side off the town on the south shore just next to the grand hotel and for 5 pound for a pass you can use there facilities(gym, pool sauna, jacusi ! If the clifton had a pool and stuff i would go back there but for now i would should recommend the royal hotel.

We booked this hotel after an ad in the paper and just before we left, we read these reviews and were quite worried as to what to expect.
From the minute we arrived and parked our car in our reserved space, the staff were extremely helpful. Our room which was at the back of the hotel was clean and tidy although the furniture was shabby.
Evening meals had plenty of choice and were very good, breakfast was good and both were served by friendly, helpful staff.
Whilst we appreciate tht this is not a five star hotel, we did not pay five star prices.
we got what we paid for and were well satisfied.
A great breakaway.
