“Let down by room housekeeping”
Reviewed August 29, 2008

I booked 2 rooms in this hotel for a 3 and 5 night stay respectively for our daughter and family and ourselves. The hotel position is superb and the food good. I particularly liked the breakfast and the general atmosphere of the place. The lounges and bar were comfy and spacious with lovely settees. Even the lift worked to plan most of the time! Parking was a bit of a problem but nothing that couldn't be sorted out.

It was a shame therefore that the hotel was let down by poor housekeeping of the bedrooms. Ours was dirty when we arrived and showing signs from the previous occupant's tenancy. We contacted reception who sent someone to clean it when we went for a meal. The carpet was dirty, the cups and tray had tea drips and grease on them, the wardrobe had soil on the shelf, the large window ledge had heavy dust as did the headboard. The vallance was half way down the mattress where it remained for 2 days despite the bed being made. The end of the vallance therefore trailed on the carpet where it had obviously been walked over many a time. We left a note asking for the mattress to be removed and vallance amended so we weren't treading on it as we went round the bed. Neither bedrooms were hoovered during our stay and the bedside tables remained untouched. Sand was left in the base of the bath and the same dead fly took up 5 days residence in the window. Shame on the cleaners and shame on the management for not supervising properly.

We had arrived one hour early on the first day and told we could go to our room for an extra £10. I think it would have been more appropriate if that one hour had been used ensuring the rooms was cleaned properly in readiness for the next guest.

Being a regular visitor to this site ,I was worried by some of the reviews I read, but I 'd already booked. It does help if you've stayed in a few two star hotels to compare. This is a two star hotel desparately trying to be a four star and in a lot of ways suceeding. The staff are brilliant and friendly and there are lots of them, food is excellent and plentyful ,good choice at breakfast, the evening meal gives and excellent variety to suit all tastes. We had a 4th floor room with a fabulous sea view if you visit you must have a sea view ,the decor is dated and tatty in places, thats how it is but room was clean and well appointed ,tv was not nailed to the top of the warbrobe so it was easy to see.
Down stairs lounges are spacious and afternoon tea and snacks can be ordered in a two star ?yes they can surprising to say the least. There is a bit of history here as well this hotel is the former Clarence Hotel Wilfred Owen [the first world war poet]managed whilst recovering from shell shock.
There are lots of ameanties around Cinema just round the corner Peasholm park next door and swimming pool a short walk away, give it a try,

Previous negative reviews made us question our decision to stay here but we were pleasantly surprised and recommend a room upgrade to get satisfaction! Lovely sea views, a clean and well presented room, no complaints!

The worst and dirtiest hotel room we've ever stayed in....

Filthy bathroom, mildew and stale urine around the toilet. Terrible smell. Clean sheets but pillow cases were full of holes and the towels were thin and used.

We booked in to the clifton over the phone and was told we needed to pay £3.50 for hotel parking. The parking was advertised on the website as being free. It is a creaky old place with loose floorboards and peeling paint we paid £112.50 for one night. The room was very basic but it did have a comfortable bed and a nice bathroom. Dont have a drink in the hotel one pint was £4.50 very expensive. If you stay during the summer months be aware that you will have to catch a bus to get to all the attractions around the corner. Its only 5 minutes away but the bus company charge £1.60 each way. Everthing in the hotel is very expensive and we think that the price was too high for the condition of the room and hotel. Shop around there are some b & bs that only charge £15-20 per night.

just returned from overnight stay here when we arrived staff on reception weren't very friendly really upset when showed to our room it was very dated headboard had fallen off the wall tea and coffee stains on dressing table top awful smell coming from bathroom we complained and someone did come and fix the headboard back on and recleaned the room but we got no apology from anyone and was told if we wanted to complain officially we would need to put this in writing. Food was ok and staff in restaurant were friendly however under no circumstances would i ever stay here again!
