My wife and I stayed here on Saturday night the 7th. Sept. We were using a voucher passed on my a relative who was unable to use it for himself and his wife. I had a look on this site before we went but thought well we would give it a go anyway as we all have different standards and the only way to judge is to visit oneself. It was as most other have said already, shabby, scruffy, covered in scaffolding and is really a shadow of its former self. Our room was tiny, I think it had been a single room as there was a single headboard still fastened to the wall, and threequarter size divan pushed underneath it. There was just enough room to get past it to the small tatty shower and toilet. A standalone wardrobe was between the end of the bed and a table and chairs under the window. It really was one of the smallest double rooms I have been in.The floors in the corridors were uneven, carpets on the stairs had gaffer tape of the threadbare patches, bits of plaster out of the walls etc. The only two positive things I can say was that the fruit bowl was fine, and the complimentary wine with our "dinner" was OK. The dinner was as someone else said just like a works dining set up. Three main course choices in warming dishes, buffet style, together with carrots and peas and potato wedges and boiled new potato.Cheap gateau for sweet and watery tea and coffee. No a la carte menu and no attempt to make it other than what it was, a cheap meal in a cheap Hotel.
Despite all this there were people there making return visits and even staying for the week. As I have already said we all have different standards.I am not well off and I do not consider myself to be a snob but I cannot understand anyone who thought that this was an acceptable Hotel.

Room Tip: I do not think there is such a thing

after booking for the Royal hotel through a voucher scheme we were informed at 8pm the night before that our room was not available due to an alleged flood ! Strange that only people who had paid through the voucher scheme were inconveinenced... We we moved to the clifton Hotel and its going through a refurb some minor problems but the staff could not do more to help us, even though they were run ragged with all the extra guests from Royal.
Special thanks to Jemma and Jack

My wife and I arrived at the hotel last Friday.

The hotel needs more than a lick of paint!!! I can only presume that the hotel maintenance is carried out by Stevie Wonder and all the people who have rated this hotel anything above terrible must be related to him.

The first room we were given was as big as a broom cupboard, once my wife complained we were given a bigger room.

The 'new' room was still a shed, below a list of complaints.

Dirty
Tiles in bathroom had no grout in them
Mirror broken
Stains on ceiling
Curtain stuck up by Blue tack
TV from Logie Bairds own stock
Plug sockets broken or taped over
Dust half inch thick on light fittings
Shabby wardrobe and under sink unit

The list can go on.

We spent a whole 20 minutes in the hotel before checking out and going home.

We were concerned that if the rooms were this bad then eating there would have put us in hospital.

Terrible, terrible hotel and I'm no snob.

This was a cheap Wowcher break, but even so it was appalling value! The room was so shabby and dated, the public areas were in a shocking condition with paint AND plaster chipping off in great quantities and sticky tape holding worn out carpets together. The bathroom was mouldy and our carpet had a large black stain on it. Our evening meal was barely warm and hardly palatable and must have cost twenty five pence per head to produce, breakfast was also luke warm and the toaster only toasted one side of the bread. Absolutely not to be recommended, however, the bed was comfy and the sheets clean.

We booked a 4 night stay and what we thought was a parking lot, when we arrived no parking had been allocated to us, apparently you have to ring the hotel direct for this but no one told us I rang to check booking as well as on line. We were lucky enough to find one and paid for it at reception, it is the only Hotel we have never had to do this before,(parking has always been free.!!It made us laugh it was just like Faulty towers watching the shenanigans in the car park other people like us thought they had paid for parking the wooden stands with your name on was passed around and the poor man who was on reception was running in all afternoon to us watching it entertained us all afternoon. We had couldn't complain about our room it was a brand new room, just needed a set of drawers we didn't have any drawers at all just wardrobe,it was on the ground floor, good job it was I'm disabled and could not have climbed stairs, the lift was always breaking down and you could not have got a w/c in no way.It didn't make sense to have disabled rooms upstairs when there are at least 8 or 9 rooms on ground floor rooms ideal for disabled people. It was spotless,a shame we couldn't say that about all the hotel to be fair they are in the middle of a refurb.Quite honestly I've never known a place where guests are considered a nuisance for a number of staff. They advertised entertainment but there was nothing on at all, we were told to go to the Grand if we wanted ,the hole point of booking this hotel was the entertainment being disabled we like to have entertainment on at night so we don't have to go out.We shall not be returning and will look carefully at Brittania hotels in future.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new annex are lovely and some even have patio doors so you can sit outside.

The Cliton has the best postion of any hotel on the North Bay, A sea view room is worth the upgrade. The victorian hotel is currently being redecorated. Like many big hotels in Scarborough, its interior is very old fashioned, but this is due to the Victorian construction. Breakfast was excellent, lost of choice, and very enjoyable.

This large and imposing Victorian hotel has a fantastic location, with superb sea views, and dinner, bed, and breakfast, with an OK bottle of Pinot Grigio thrown in, cost fifty quid a night, and with great weather, and Scarboroughs charm, we enjoyed our stay, despite rather than because of the hotel.

Our room was large, but tired, with an ancient TV and threadbare carpets. The bathroom had been re tiled, and a new looking suite fitted recently, but the washbasin failed to drain properly, and the bathtap/shower mixer was very difficult to set to shower mode. The corridor area outside (on second floor) was grim, and grubby, and the lift is ancient. The beds were clean, as were the towels, but housekeeping standards can be judged by the presence of the last occupants half used bottle of shower gel being left in the bathroom, and, bizarrely, two pizza boxes, with half eaten pizzas in them, being left on top of the wardrobe.

The bar etc was clean and bright, but under staffed, and there was not even any music. The overworked staff tried their best, but looked pressured and miserable. The food was school dinners circa 1975, right down to the steamed pudding and custard. Our first dinner was OK, i had chicken korma, my partner, cottage pie, simple stuff, but hot and tasty. The second night was poached haddock with dill sauce, broccoli, and new potatoes, which sound great, but was dire. Every element was overcooked to the point of ruin. The fish was hard and tasteless, the broccoli was falling apart, and the potatoes mush. This was good ingredients ruined.

With investment this could be a great hotel, but right now its poor at best.

Room Tip: High floor and bay window sea view rooms are best.
