“I would never go to this hotel again”
Reviewed August 8, 2011

This hotel as a whole was tired and grubby in the public areas. Our room was filthy and shabby - nothing short of a good fire would sort it out. The enamel was half on and half off the bath - and the taps on the basin turned as you used them. The walls and floor were dirty and the back of the bathroom door was grey with grime. The setee in the room was badly stained and who knows with what and falling apart. The stains on the headboard were very off putting. To be asked for a £20 deposit for the TV remote was an insult. The menu was from the 1980s like the curtains and carpets and last cleaners bill.. The sea view was fantastic but if the windows were clean inside or out it would have been better.

We've stayed here before, but in the winter. Got a very good budget break for 2 nights. The building is beautiful but run-down; the problems of keeping up roofs, staircases, corridors, that are old and eccentrically laid out must be enormous. Signs of leaking roofs and worn stair carpets were apparent. Our room was OK for the price, but we had problems with the toilet flush which were never fully resolved, although addressed by the staff. These were friendly and helpful on the whole, although while we were there, news broke that the hotel was up for sale, so staff must have been worried about the future. Food was straightforward but good in a basic English way - better than our previous visit.
Three courses for dinner, with nice home made soup, and well cooked vegetables. Breakfast is a buffet with options of cereals or porridge, and boiled or poached eggs if one didn't want a fry-up.
Our main concern was the disabled friendly aspect of the hotel. We had a wheelchair bound member of our party, and while the entrance, bar and dining room were accessible, we had serious problems getting the wheelchair in the (old-fashioned) lift, due to the layout of the corridor and lift entrance. There was also some confusion over our booking, and the siting of our rooms, but this was sorted to our satisfaction quite quickly.
The position of the hotel is amazing, with fabulous views over North Bay and the headland with Scarborough Castle. Just up the road is the graveyard with Anne Bronte's grave; together with the Wilfred Owen connection, quite a literary hot-spot. It could be a fabulous hotel, or holiday apartments, but would require considerable outlay!

We looked on the internet for a hotel overlooking the sea in Scarborough. Google came up with a few. We checked the Clifton's website and saw some nice pictures of public rooms and bedrooms. Lift to all floors. The reviews on their website gave a thumbs up. We booked a twin room with sea view for three nights 28th - 31st July. Deposit £156, including £18 for guaranteed parking and £8 credit card fee.
We arrived at the hotel at 2pm and registered, paying the balance of £260. The public rooms of bar and dining room looked OK at a glance. As our bedroom was not yet available we went for a walk along the sea front.
Arriving back around 5pm we were given the key and went up to Room 361. We decided to use the stairs and noticed that after the second floor the stair carpet was through to the backing in many places.
Opening the bedroom door you could have pushed us over with a feather! We were absolutely shocked! How on earth could they be charging £130 per night for B&B for that room? The carpet was frayed in several places, some of the lights in the bathroom were not working, there was a broken floor tile in the bathroom, the ceiling paper in the bathroom was hanging off, the drawers were of the melamine MFI variety (discoloured and past their best many years ago) and the list could go on for ever. The sea view would have been good if the windows were clean.
We returned to reception and after explaining that this room was unacceptable, we were
offered an alternative a couple of doors down the corridor but without a sea view. Back we went up to the fourth floor in what could only be described as an antique lift. If the first room warranted a score of 1 out of 10, this one would not have gained a 2. There were at least three floor tiles in this bathroom that were broken, there were dirty marks on the peeling wallpaper and the skirtings were in need of scrubbing.
Back down to reception (with the suitcase this time) and we were told that if we would manage with the room for the night we would be transferred to another for the remaining
two nights. Horror. What would this one be like? No way.
I asked for a full refund and would find somewhere else.
Sorry, but I couldn't have a refund. I looked for the contact details of my credit card company and the mood changed. The lady on reception would try and get authorisation from her manager. Ten minutes later the transaction was done, but minus the £8 credit card charge.
We have never walked out of a hotel before, and probably never will again.
The Clifton probably did us a favour. We drove a few miles away from Scarborough and found a delightful place. A clean pleasant room but without the sea-view, free guaranteed parking, three course gourmet meals, no credit card supplement and all our drinks, for the same price as B&B at the Clifton.

Room Tip: Avoid room 361

We stayed last minute at the Clifton and got a good rate - its a two star hotel so our expectations weren't high.
The place is in need of a refurbishment but the rooms were clean and quite comfortable. A couple of suggestions to the team
1) the reception area where the staff sit behind another desk doesn't make for a very friendly welcome, particularly when the staff don't come around to the desk to speak to you.
2) breakfast at 8 was not very helpful for business clients and the lack of flexibility from the hotel gave us 10 minutes to have breakfast before we had to leave. There were a lot of people waiting for breakfast... could this be telling you something?

I would go back to the Clifton as i said, it does what it says on the tin, but i might look for a 3 start tin next time.

Paid £80 for a sea view room number 364, bedroom an absolute disgrace tread bear carpets and overall un clean. On pulling back the bedding pillow was covered in long dark hairs, pubic hair on bathroom wall two bars of soap down the toilet?? rang reception to ask for a change of pillow, got the change of pillow with no apology explained about the soap in toilet but nothing was done about it so on using it, it blocked asked to changed rooms but apparently fully booked!! Breakfast an absolute joke ignorant staff and I wouldn't feed it to my dog, on the plus side bar had cheap drinks between 4 and 6 and the young girl behind the bar was very helpful and friendly, great location but would definitely NOT go back. Would b a great hotel if some money was put into it in big need if some T.L.C...

Well this is in all honesty a lovely hotel that has been a little neglected over the years. The location is fantastic, the staff generally friendly and the views from the slightly dearer Seaview rooms magnificent! However ,the evening restaurant is only open short hours and the food is very basic. Cottage Pie, Liver casserole and cheese & Broccoli bake - not exactly inspiring. Also the quality of the evening food was at best poor. Breakfast on the other hand was pretty good, not top quality, but pleasant and plenty of it. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, but the management have some bizarre rules around if you buy a couple of glasses of wine you get the rest of the bottle free but you can't have the bottle at the table? No idea why. evening meals are only served 6.30 - 8, also a bit odd for a hotel, we did not bother with the dinner on the 2nd and 3rd nights. The room was clean and had been recently decorated and was plenty big enough. However still managed to be quite shabby with rawlplug holes in the wall, bath panel all split, and a patch on the celing where there had been a large leak. The whole buliding needs some money spending on it , as this could be a great place, was a lovely building once upon a time! Value - well we did a DBB deal and if the food had been acceptable would have been fairly good value, as it wasn't we ended up using it as a B&B as the food was a lot better locally at better prices. Hope they get a bit of investment for the building and some quality & inspiration in the kitchen.

Room Tip: Upgrade to as best as you can afford, preferably a Seaview one
