Grand Hotel Scarborough
Ranked #26 of 26 Hotels in Scarborough

Found this hotel was lacking in all aspects, room, beds and bedding need updating, staff uninterested and unhelpful, food was terrible, in fact we booked 2 nights breakfast and evening meals, we ate out the next day. Spoke to some guests and they said it had improved alot in the last 3 years. The only possitive was the location. We won't be going back. Worst hotel we've stay in

This was our first visit to Scarborough and after reading some 'bad' reviews we were apprehensive to say the least, we needent have worried. We arrived at the hotel to be met by a friendly receptionist who explained where the room and restaurant were. What a fantastic room we had. We had a sea view as I had requested on the booking form, but not only that, we also had a twin jacuzzi bath, and a set of scales to keep an eye on our weight! The breakfast was a good choice of hot and cold foods- cereals/ full english/ jam and toast/yogurts/ fruit, the young men in the restaurant kept the tables clean and again sea views to enjoy whist eating. The evening entertainment was fun- bingo and a small cabaret in the quaint cabaret ballroom. We will certainly come to the hotel again.

Arrived to a very unhelpful receptionist, didnt even look up when i spoke to her.
Got to room, not cleaned from previous guest. Filthy bedlinen, filthy carpet, filthy windows, no phone, broken tv, no heating, thick dirt and dust on the windowsills. What looked like rat droppings on the floor. ( have taken samples for testing !!)
Where is the manager? and what kind of manager lets his staff be so rude to guests? When we asked a cleaner if she would clean our room we were told by her 'no!!' and when we said it was still dirty she just said ' WHATEVER!!'
Only stayed at the hotel as everywhere else seemed to be fully booked, and as a pensioner I could not just leave without having anywhere else to go.
What this hotel needs I think is new trained staff for reception, housekeeping staff and a lot more of them. Then teach them all to smile :)

booked single for myself and twin beds for my 2 sisters, we arrived to find double bed and
bunk bed allocated to my sisters, they complained to management this was not suitable
but were told there were no other rooms available and nothing could be done.
I phoned Glenton next morning and said this was not acceptable, would they sort it out.
got a call back within the hour saying that the bunk bed was being replaced with a single bed, got back after tour to find double, single and bunk beds in room -3 beds!!! more phone calls to glenton before bunk bed was removed - terrible. There were only two small lifts to cope with 6 floors and at meal time queue stretched across from the
restaurant, upstairs and across to the opposite side - chaotic. took 25 minutes to get down from 6th floor. Food was disappointing, boring and little variety.

Unhelpful girl on reception, asked for bath and only got shower, room was so small double bed up against wall not good if need toilet in night. Dinner was a battle field of the zimmer frames - food was lukewarm and lacked appeal in even appearance, breakfast wasn't much better. Shame its not advertised as a hotel mainly catering for the older coach travellers holiday trips or we would have booked somewhere more appropriate but luckily was only there one night before moving on to Whitby couldn't have stayed any longer

We arrived at the hotel on the 29th May 2010 - We decided to check in immediately, we where checked in by a lovely woman at the reception, who was very helpful and kind compared to the miserable people we have had on previous occasions.

Out room was clean, very spacious and overall fantastic.

The only place I could fault the hotel is the premier restaurant which has moved yet again back to its original position next to the harbour lights restaurant - its far too small to accommodate all the premier guests; at most their was 6 tables that can seat a party with more than 2 people - since we had three people we often found ourselves waiting up to half an hour for a table, a woman who we nicknamed 'Hitler' who may have been the restaurant manager was incredibly rude often just saying "Wait over there for a table" and making a pushing hand gesture - just generally incredibly rude towards guests; we found many others who felt the same way about her.

Food was nice, nothing special - many of the dishes had metal lids over the top to keep them warm, which where quite loud when people where removing them so be prepared to have a headache! also at times when food ran out it took up to half an hour for the chef to realise and bring out more, which often lead to yet more waiting times.

I definitely think the hotel should bring back the age restriction (15 years old I think it was) as everywhere you went there where screaming kids/babies, which was especially bad in the restaurant and while playing bingo - not only that there where kids running all-over, playing in lifts and shouting which has really ruined the calm atmosphere the hotel once had.

Overall I would recommend the hotel, but be prepared and bring earphones!
