There is nothing wrong with this hotel. We only stayed one night as a National holiday deal, and I must admit I was worried by the reviews, however when we got there we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The first thing the receptionist did was say the rooms we were allocated we're small so she gave us better rooms, rooms 4 and 14 which were terraced rooms with a sea view. Perfectly clean and comfortable. Entertainment was fine, lager, normal price, meals both spot on, can't say what other rooms were like, but I' ve had a few stays with Britannia and have never had a dirty room so assume these are the same. So don't worry, give it a go.

We were moved to the "grand" hotel thru work.first impressions when trying to check in,not enough staff to deal with the coach party that had arrived just before us.after eventually check-in we went down to our room in the basement room 12,small twin room that hadn't seen a cleaning cloth in a very long time.we admired our sea view of weeds below the window through the speckled effect window.after later finding out all the Windows were filthy.then we ventured into the bathroom, which has a shower and no bath.faces screwed up we looked at the mouldy shower tiles and decided we were not staying in this room.
After complaining we were given room 31,a bigger room with clean shower tiles.
I have never in 9 years of staying in hotels seen hand sanitiser at the side of the lift before!! Says it all really.
Apart from the cleanliness of this hotel,it has lots of different rooms, lounge room, games room, cabaret room, terrace room which is a good idea- just a pity it is not presented better.the roof terrace has a good view of the seafront.
Breakfast is as basic as you get.although many of my colleagues refused to eat there I tried the evening bar meals which were freshly cooked and good value for money.they only seem to have one bar open at a time in the evening, which is ok if you don't mind queuing as coach parties stay at the hotel.I wonder if they had more bar staff to keep both bars open in the evening how much more they would sell.
Ok as a basic hotel,if you are after a lush hotel look elsewhere

Hope this helps you when choosing a hotel in Scarborough we recently stayed in the Grand Hotel for a week, the Hotel is situated near the town centre, this was our fifth stay this year, yes it is an old hotel but with lots of character. But what makes this Hotel stand out from the rest is its staff from the very warm welcome from Lucy and Dale on Reception, Angie and Helen in the Restaurant to Sylvene and Gary in the lounge bar and main bar, all the staff will go the extra mile for you if they can especially these people I have named looking forward to our next stay.

Stayed hear for a week as was working in Scarborough. Looks like a beautiful stunning building from outside ( which is were it ends). Reception area is OK but then the rooms..... my room 27 avoid if possible. Quilts don't cover the bed dated furnishings stained carpet shower is best turned on then have a bath on the floor as that's were most of water is. Paint flakes off ceilings. Can't comment on food as I choose to skip breakfast as others said it was not worth eating. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS IF POSSIBLE

Room Tip: Choose a new hotel

stayed here via National Holidays three day coach package. As it was for my Mums birthday i phoned the hotel in advance and upgraded to room with sea view and spa bath. the hotel looks impressive on arrival and the foyer with Grand staircase is a nice place to sit. However go through to the quiet lounge and the leather sofas are shabby, one with a large hole in it. our room was labelled the executive suite but was very basic. we did not use the spa bath as the cleanliness of the room made us worry about legionnaires. there was really thick dust onthe tops of the radiators, plus broken biscuits. the sea view was marred by filthy windows and netting (i do understand about the seagull problem!). the bed linen was palin and reminicsent of hospitals, and the single quilts did not cover adequately. the restaurant food was not as bad as i had been led to beleive, although some things such as the fish did leave a nasty aftertaste. although the hotel is listed as having nightly entertainment this was merely bingo and short caberet. If you were having trouble sleeping i recommend the bingo as the caller the night we played just droned the numbers out with no traditional bingo slogans such as legs 11. overall the hotel is shabby and needs more attention paid to the cleanliness of the rooms.

To start off we paid £40 for DBB, we upgraded to the premier package and ate our 2 meals in the premier restaurant where the food and service was fantastic, Dressed Crab, soup, salad for starters and Roast beef and Yorks puds, roast pots followed by choc cake, superb!!
The young lady on reception was very polite, professional,we had qualified for a bottle of bubbly on a hotel promotion, this was organised without any fuss.
The room was OK, hot water, warm room, TV worked.
After our meal we sat in the Balcony and watched a Beatles tribute band who were brilliant with our champagne in an ice bucket kindly provided by the bar staff who were all efficient, friendly and professional.
This is a hotel that caters for coach parties and maker alot of money over the bars, the decor is dated in certain arears but overall this is a fantatstic hotel steeped in history.
I would recommmend this hotel for an overnight stay, preferably on a Sunday when its quieter and would have no qualms in returning.
A special mention to the ladies in the restaurant who were great

Room Tip: try and get a sea view

On arrival observed a number of notices advising of sanitisation machines and asking that we use them. The one on the fifth floor outside the lifts was empty and was still empty 24 hours later despite advising room cleaner outside lift (nothing to do with me it is maintenance), Reception (it is her responsibility will sort it) and then Head of Housekeeping (correct not her responsibility).
I told her that she should have taken responsibility. "I don't care whose responsibility it is it needs sorting" and she agreed. Later that day it was sorted.

Observed a room cleaner cleaning a glass with a pillow case which looked to be bloodstained but not certain of this. it was definitely a pillow case.

Room was very dirty - tv screen - chair and skirtings - cobwebs on ceiling and mould on bathroom ceiling.

I had a Sea View (if you stood on the toilet seat.

No wardrobe but a wall with coat hangers.

A very very small CITY ROOM.

Food reasonable if you go to the buffet early and no queues.

Room Tip: Don't have a City Single Room because most of them don't have windows and you will need a fa...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments. The room which you stayed in was one of our value rooms, these rooms are the newest additions to the hotel, offering good value for money, all of our value rooms contain air cooling with the addition of a fan for your comfort. To guarantee a room with a window it is advisable to upgrade to an executive room which have sea views.
