Overnight stay in the penthouse with fantastic panoramic views across Scarborough. Quality buffet included fresh fish, meat, chicken and fish main, salad and veg. Desserts were fabulous with cold and hot options, cheese biscuits and coffee.the staff were professional and the room was ready a good hour before our official check in time.

The hotel itself is old and does need some tlc in areas but its beautiful.

We first stayed in this hotel 5 years ago and vowed never to return. Everything about it was awful. However overcome by an urge for a last minute break last Thursday evening - and the extremely low price of £29 for a double room inc. breakfast we decided to risk another stay. We arrived about 3.30pm on Friday and queue for check in was massive and very slow moving. Most other people seemed to be complaining about their rooms so it didn't bode well! Our expectations were very low so we were prepared for just about anything. Except what we got. Our room on the 3rd floor was very spacious, perfectly clean with 2 huge windows looking over the beach and up to the harbour and castle. The room had a settee and a coffee table with 2 chairs. The bathroom was also very clean and had a spa bath. The decor wasn't brilliant and the furniture has seen better days but the bed was very comfortable, however the curtains were very thin so we were woken by the sun at first light. We had to queue for about half an hour for breakfast but it was good when we eventually got it. To say we were surprised by the standard of our room and our stay in general is an understatement!! Will definately risk another visit but it does seem to be absolute pot luck!

We visited this hotel on a two night break with 2 other couples. This was booked through Caledonian Travel. After reading previous Trip Advisor reports we did not have high expectations but we were pleasantly surprised. The outside of the building is magnificent. The public areas of the hotel, although slightly tired, show how grand it would have been in it's heyday. The 3 rooms we had were all of an acceptable standard with very comfortable beds. The food, while not gourmet, was of a good standard, apart from the foamy sausages at breakfast.

It should be borne in mind by people that this is not a 4/5 star hotel. The prices paid for our stay were very reasonable.

Please do not be put off by adverse reports on this site - judge for yourself.

We booked a long weekend in Scarborough with a trip to historic York included with Just Go Holidays in Cheltenham. We were originally going to go there in March but this was cancelled and the April date replacement offered which we took. We have never been to this part of the world. The coach and driver were provided by Crosville from Weston-Super-Mare. The driver was Mary and she is by far the best driver I have ever gone away with. So smooth on the road. You could sleep on the way. Great sense of humour and always so professional. That's the good. When we got to hotel we were told to stay on the coach for the hotel manager to come aboard and give us a talk. He didn't turn up although we waited for half an hour. We went into the hotel and the queue at reception went back 100 yards. After waiting for another twenty minutes we were told to go into ballroom. Manager finally turned up and what an idiot. No people skills which we found to be the same with all the reception team and some of the bar staff. Britannia need to send these people on a course. This is the bad. Room not bad - clean and tidy. Furniture out of the 1930's. Shower nice and bathroom clean except for beneath the bowl of the toilet. Didn't look as if it had been cleaned there for years. Food on first night was horrendous - beef stroganoff should have been called gristle stroganoff. Breakfasts were acceptable without being exceptional. Not much fresh in any meals but with over 600 rooms you could understand this. We ate out Saturday night - See separate review of Golden Grid. Queues for restaurant meals horrendous. They have two restaurant and we were assigned Harbour Lights which is the largest. As our original stay was cancelled we were informed by the travel agent that we were to have a complimentary glass of wine each with each meal. On the Friday night we waited to be offered this but had to ask in the end. We were informed that we had to get vouchers from reception. What a nightmare. They would not just issue them - we had to show letter. They were like the Gestapo and treated our party with distain. They had the list of people in our party - why couldn't they staple the vouchers to our key cards when they issued them I don't know. Entertainment on whole tried hard but lady had bad voice. She was better on Sunday night singing 60's songs. They looked very good and dancers were lovely. So overall top marks go to Duncan in restaurant - what a lovely man. Hard working, cheerful and great with people. Ryan on bar also special - nothing too much trouble. These people obviously work to their own standards as most of the workforce look like they would leave straight away if they could get another job. What about ugly ?. Well I used toilet outside bar and toilet roll holder came free and whacked me on head. When I complained to reception to make sure no-one else got hurt they mended it by using a tissue to jam it shut. Great maintenance !. Another gripe is size of lift - only takes 3 people and with size of hotel long wait before everyone transported to their floor. Overall would not recommend this hotel. Britannia need to audit site and rectify shortcomings !!.

As a solo traveller to my National Federation of Occupational Pensioners conference in the Spa Complex at Scarborough I needed, for the first time, to find accommodation for myself and found the Grand Hotel via the internet. The moderate charge for bed, breakfast & evening meal was fair and the reception staff put me ( as an older person ) in a twin room on the fourth floor as an upgrade at no extra charge. This hotel seems to have a lot of custom from coach parties and a higher than usual percentage of folk of mature years means pressure on the lifts. My meals were served buffet style in a huge dining room that overlooked the town and were of good value especially the soup which was excellent. Seating was comfortable & assistance with service of food for those unable to easily serve themselves was given in a friendly way. After dinner coffee/tea was self service in the lounge area and could have been better laid out. Though there are signs of the heavy traffic on the corridor carpets they were intact and reduced the noise of pedestrian traffic along them. I didn't take part in any of the entertainment having heard the word Bingo! Very pleasant to hear a pianist in the lounge, after dinner, playing old favourites. Very high winds when I was there so my courtyard facing room was sheltered but not from angry seagulls taking refuge there squarking for perching points. Reception staff knew their town and were most helpful. There is WiFi but never had the chance to use it as the password included numeric figures.

Room Tip: Though sea view rooms would seem to be a good idea I believe that the high winds might mean one of t...

In January, I booked a standard room via LateRooms.com for my wife and I to celebrate our wedding anniversary on the 4th April. We were both looking forward to staying in a hotel which appeared to offer such excellent views of the coastline. Our home is in Newcastle upon Tyne and prior to arriving at the hotel we had spent a couple of days in Northamptonshire visiting relatives. The journey back up the M1 was a nightmare due to the amount of traffic and we were both looking forward to relaxing in our room. However, upon arrival we were shocked to be told that the room we had been allocated was in the basement. The basement! When I enquired as to why, I was told that the hotel was fully booked "due to the kids being off". We went to view the room, which we considered to be in a poor decorative condition, and it was then we became aware that there are three floors below ground level. We were so disappointed with our booking that I went straight back to reception to inform the clerk that we would not be staying. The journey home, at night, was hazardous on an unfamiliar road but it was preferable to spending the night in a basement room in what is advertised as a "grand hotel". Upon later checking our key card slip we noticed our room number had been tippexed out and the number changed. Upon re-checking their site it does state (which I hadn't noticed at the time of making the booking) that some standard rooms are without windows but what they don't mention is that there are three floors below ground level. Never again.

Room Tip: Ensure it's not below ground level.
