My wife and i have just returned from this hotel, having had a 4 night break with national coach holidays.Having read some of the previous reviews we had some reservations about booking, but we have learned from the past what suits one might not suit others,so try it for yourself. On arrival we were allocated a twin room on the 3rd floor, the room appeared clean and tidy.but felt quite small,it did have a window but no view, which made it feel dark.I asked reception if we could upgrade to a premier room with sea view, the receptionist was very pleasant and found us another room for which we paid an extra £80,which included our entry to the premier dining room, which is a smaller dining area which seats about 50 people. On the first evening meal when we went down to dine, the queue to get into the normal restaurant was all the way down the stairs and i think was taking about 20 mins to get in,It didnt involve us thanks to the upgrade. My biggest grouse was finding that the heating was turned off at 10.30am until 16.30pm on a daily basis,As the temperature dropped to minus figures outside not such a good idea,I asked at reception for a portable heater, the girl said she would see what she could do,obviously not a lot as it never appeared, with the hotel catering for hundreds of elderly people this practice needs a serious re-think,or maybe they could train maintenace how to overide the timer when needed.I have read lots about the food at this hotel, but can say the food on offer in premier dining was excellent.

Room Tip: at least ask for a sea view

I have come to trip advisor after having the most terrible stay at this hotel.

Firstly the room was filthy, dirty sheets, left overs form the previous stay including a champagne bottle, empty sadly, and dirty towels, we didn't check in till after 4pm!

We booked what should have been a cheap deal, but cost us more that was expected. Firstly the room was huge, and cold. The heating had a mind of its own and the children went to bed in the cold and woke up in the cold, reception couldn't care less. There was hot water from the basin but not from the bath or the shower, reception said that it was our fault because we had chosen peak times to have a shower or bath the children!

We were booked in for Dinner, bed and breakfast and it was horrible, we never got the free bottle of wine we were promised, the food was inedible, we were made to feel like we were causing trouble when we requested a vegetarian meal and kids meals, and they were so badly cooked we had to go out and find a Weatherspoons, just so the children would eat. The Breakfasts were even worse, thank goodness for the cafes on the front.

Entertainment was a joke, they only catered for the golden oldies, lots of proper dancing, a bingo for over 18s and entertainment that wasn't relevant for anyone under 50! It cost us a fortune on the front keeping the children entertained. The hotel advertise Family Entertainment. My children were told off by the, non english, staff because they decided to play Strictly Come Dancing to the Octogenarians who were dancing - they are children, it was boring for my partner and i so for small children it must have been beyond boring.

There is no car parking and the staff sent us to the wrong car park on the first night, thanks to other visitors we met we found this out, and it cost us £6 a day to park outside the hotel! They claimed we had misunderstood, the reception staff were not english and their english was poor to put it mildly.

When we wrote expressing our disappointment and the problems we had encountered the hotel have completley ignored us - they should have responded within 21 days and 3 mths later i'm still waiting, we have phoned the hotel and been told the General Manager isn't available.

We have stayed with Britannia a lot, my children love Southport and Liverpool and this is the first hotel we have ever encountered problems.

I would suggest that you take your money and you visit other Britannia hotels with a family unless you want to pay extra to keep your children fed and watered let alone entertained.

This hotel are in it for the older generation and don't care about young families and their stay.

Room Tip: dont go into the basement, no windows

What a great old building. We stayed in one of the turret bedrooms with our grandchildren who loved the whole experience. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Our extra bed had not been made up on arrival but this was dealt with quickly and efficiently and lots of extra towels left too. The kids loved the self-service restaurant where we found a great choice of food and again helpful, welcoming staff. We are already planning another visit.

Okay, the hotel is a bit tired, you are not going to need your tux! BUT the staff are lovely, so helpful; nothing is a bother. AMAZING value for money! we paid £25 for a double b&b. We had a room with Jacuzzi/spa bath. furniture is 'retro' but cute. Rooms are very clean, beds very comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic, self service but all freshly cooked; if it's not there just ask! (our first room was a twin with no view; so we asked for a double with a view; new room given; no problem) Good mix of clientele. Families, couples, older people on coach trips.
Hotel is in a prime position, fantastic views; next to all the 'good' bars/nightlife, shops, beach etc.
would definitely recommend. can also use swimming pool and gym facilities at sister hotel.
negative points; coffee awful! have to pay for parking; but can buy a pass from reception giving you parking in all car parks for £6.

Room Tip: request a room on a high floor with a view ( we got one) and if you don't like it; just ask to c...

I stayed her with my mum for the New Year Eve break & it was the WORST break i have ever had!!! Apart from the reception staff not being helpful or at all apologetic, the Harbour Lights Restaurant had an awful smell as you waited at the top of the stairs, there was always a queue each night for your meal. The food in this restaurant i would not recommend at all, food on the hot plate was very dry and no taste at all, just looked as though the chefs had thrown the food into the containers. The windows to this restaurant are dirty and dripping with condensation, there is black mould to the ceiling. Our room was never cleaned within the 4days of us staying. The lifts were dirty, where the buttons to the floors where covered in finger prints & were still like this when we vacated 4days later. The hotel we stayed at in Tenerife in June 2012 the staff were always cleaning, the staff could never do enough for you, the food was amazing. The final straw of staying at this hotel The Grand, which i must stress does not add upto its name, was on the day of leaving, thank god. My Mum was shaking the quilt to make this more tidy and noticed that to the main quilt under the cover was soaked in places with 'period' blood!!!!!!!!! this was the final straw. At this point i went to Reception to complain to the Manager, where no offer of apology was given!!!!! All i will say about this hotel is the main reception was nicely decorated for Christmas and the staircase was beautiful but this is about it. I will not be recommending this hotel to anyone. I have also written a full complaint to the Manager at Britannia Hotels and had no response what so ever, so that says alot. Just don't waste your money by staying at this dirty hotel.

Being Yorkshire born and bred, my wife and I have often looked at the Grand thinking it must be very special to stay there, so when we got a last minute booking for a New year celebration, it seemed an opportunity not to be missed. What a waste of time and money. Outside its impressive, real Victoriana. Inside its a nightmare. It looks like someone went mad with a dulux colour sampler. Beautiful marble pillars painted PINK. Walls which look as though they have used up half empty pots of paint, different colour patches all over , and this was just on entering. We were allocated a nice room and when we finally managed to get our cases to it found f it light and roomy AND COLD.No heating, no hot water, so back down to reception to find out whats going on almost stepped on dog feaces on the carpet outside the door. Not a dog or owner in sight.By this time expectations were very low and we weren`t disappointed. The Food was terrible, the dining room freezing and as for the sea view we wouldn`t know as we couldn`t see through the filthy dirty windows. The entertainment consisted of bingo, disco and a couple of singers using broken equipment (Split Speakers). The last straw was the heating breaking down again on New Years day. My wife spent the whole afternoon in bed trying to keep warm.
If you want a hotel that will assault your eyes, ruin your palate, lower you body temperature to the point where you lose the will to live, and love dogs, lots of dogs and their waste products, then this is the place for you.Real people please form an orderly queue for the train to Bridlington!
