Stayed here the end of sept for two nights. The first night we were given a room -1. This turned out to be below ground right next to the kitchens. So not only was it noisy with the clatter of dishes but had a strong food smell permeating the corridors. The room at first glance had a window which turned out to be a false bay window frame with a window that opened showing the wall paper. The room although was booked for two people had a guest bed in it also which took up all the space as it was a small bedroom to start with. There was no ventilation so as the evening progressed the room became a sauna. We complained to reception and was told to come back in the morning as the hotel was fully booked. I went back the following morning and was allocated a new room but told it would not be ready till 2pm. I was asked to vacate the room we were in by 10 to enable staff to get this ready for the next guests. Our replacement room was satisfactory.

Breakfast was very poor. Coffee and tea was in a flask that had obviously been made at the start of the morning 7ish and not replenished during the morning.

The only positives of this hotel was the location and the atmosphere.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room in the basement

Our first time and the last time! Staying here at the so called The Grand! Well check in is a Nightmare 40mins to check in and the queues were like a mile long (no joke!) Parking Nightmare their is none either pay £6.00 for a permit from the hotel to park outside but of course you CAN NOT get a space as their is only about 20 spaces for the whole hotel!!!! So you cant buy a permit from the hotel so you have to pay around £12.50+ at a parking meter whitch is are a looooooooooooooong walk from the hotel! Then when you have finally done all that and found your room whitch is a task in it's self! As the rooms are very badly sign posted and spend over tonns of floors! You are greeted with a manky, shabby, dirty room! PUNCH HOLE'S were in our doors! Very nice when you have traveled miles to get here! OH and our room had a window we were on the third floor! We checked out as we did not want to stay for even one night! We did get our full money back that's why it get one point! But trust this place is a nightmare you can get a lot better B&B's than this my advice is book elsewere as this place will ruin your hoilday like it did us!

Room Tip: Do not stay here

We booked this hotel for 35 pounds a night bed and breakfast for one night aware that the reviews for the hotel were pretty bad but for the price we were willing to take a chance. It was a lot better than we were expecting and the room was ok and clean as was the bathroom but maybe a little dated. The main area of the hotel is magnificent the staircase and landing are iconic .This hotel has a great character that you dont find in modern hotels The entertainment was good but drinks from the bar are a little pricey. The breakfast was ok but the food quality was a little bit below standard and the dining room could do with a little updating. This hotel is not without its faults and it could do with some work in some areas but we will return to it as we found the hotel had a charm and elegance about it.It seems that a lot of the criticism centres around the windowless basement rooms, which we did not see.but were told by the staff that they are billed as economy rooms . The price that we paid and what got was unbeatable value.

The hotel is in great need of an overhall. It took us an hour just to check in. Then to be directed to the wrong lift (which was not working)and in the wrong direction. When we finally found our way ourselves, down into what seemed to be the cellar/dundgeon the corridors were littered with cages that were full of rubbish/dirty bedding(which seemed to be there at all times of the day/night. The room had just one piece of art on the walls. The bed was not a double bed(as booked) it was two singles, that had not even been connected together, with two single mattresses and a quilt that barely reached the edge of the bed. Wanted an early night the first night only to find out that the room was directly under the caberet ballroom, could not see the act,but could sing along to every song. Meals were selfservice from what could only remind me of an Army cookhouse. The tea and coffee at all meals were in flasks neither were hot. Some good points, the hot water was really hot and the entertainment was good.

Room Tip: Talking to other guests it is not worth the extra to upgrade

The hotel is very old with fantastic history however the decor in the rooms is very outdated. The breakfast had a good selection with fruit, fruit juice, cereals and bacon etc. The reception staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and the maids were polite and helpful. Can't fault the staff...they do exceptionally well with a very old building. The views are amazing and it's location is great. Overall good value for money as we only paid £70 for 2 people for 2 nights

On arrival I had to enter the hotel via the tradesmen/delivery entrance because I am unable to climb stairs. At reception given a room with a glorious view of the bay from window, netting in front of window rather off putting, but we loved the view so we were happy. MY friend and I soon started to re-adjust our thoughts on the first encounter with trying to get on the lift to go up for dinner. 15 minutes after first pressing for lift I was finally able to get in it. 3 people only allowed in so with so many people you just watch the lift going up and down. Finally got to the restaurant, once you have been checked by the duty person, in you go. Cattle drive for food is the best way I would describe it. The food was not particularly inviting to look at or eat, not my standards at all. Staff are hovering to grab plates as soon as you put your cutlery down, even if the other person on the table is still eating. The week got no better and on the last but one day I was taken ill in the early hours with violent sickness/diarrhoea. When reception notified by my friend she was told to return to room and stay inside. clean bed linen/towels/water/coffee/tea/milk were brought plus form to fill in. Statement made was that a visit every hour would be made to see how I was. No-one came back until tea-time to ask my friend if she would like a dinner, yes she said, picked meal ( this was to have been first food she had been given all day) BUT, they never came back with food or anything else. To say staff didn't care would be an understatement. It was apparent that the only thing they were worried about was that we were isolated and out of sight. The next day I was a little improved but still poorly, knew I could'nt travel on coach (driver/courier were nowhere to be found) so I had to make arrangements to get home by taxi. This cost me a whopping £160 on top of a holiday cost that was not worth it. Needless to say my friend and myself will not be returning to this hotel, nor will we stay at a large hotel ever again. Before we book a coach tour again, the hotel will be reviewed and if it is big we will not use it.I'm sure that food brought in ready prepared on metal trays that fit in the servery, but initially left in corridor opposite delivery door for anything and everything to be able to blow in around it is really not an enviromental friendly idea. I expected better for my money, even if they are classed as budget holidays.

We've just returned from our second stay at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough. This is a beautiful old building. If you want chrome, glass and the finish of a new build this is not the hotel for you. If you like faded elegance and charm then this is the place to stay. When I say faded I don't mean scruffy or dirty but more like a woman who has been a great beauty in her youth and has matured into a handsome elderly lady. The building is stunning. The central staircase sweeps majestically to the first floor. The lounge contains comfortable seating and low tables. The lifts are small but again remember this building was never designed to accomodate lifts and shafts so the space available was limited.

Last time our room was on the sixth floor. This time we were on one of the much maligned lower floors. The room was a good size with wardrobe, plenty of draw space and a lovely view over the bay to the harbour. The radiator was easy to turn up and down depending on how much heat we needed. The good sized bathroom contained a jacuzzi and a powerful shower. It was spotlessly clean. Our only niggle was that our room was directly underneath the Cabaret Ballroom and we could hear the cabaret through the ceiling but as it only lasted 45 to 60 minutes it wasn't really an issue. The rest of the time our room was quiet and peaceful.

Reception was busy when we checked in as we arrived at the same time as two coaches but we were only waiting a few minutes. The receptionists were friendly even though they were really busy. The have the knack of making you feel that you're the only person there even though you're one of many.

The Harbour Restaurant has stunning views across the South Bay. The food is tasty and plentiful with a good selection to choose from. The waiting staff are unobtrusive but efficient watching the tables and being ready to help a guest or clear used crockery as necessary. It was a pleasure to eat there.

Would I stay there again? Certainly.
