Some friends of mine from abroad had been told about The Anvil by a friend and asked me to book it for us when they next visited. I had been told good things about it from friends of mine too and was really looking forward to it. The gentleman who took the booking on the phone was very helpful and when I called back nearer the time to check the date he was lovely (Even though it was 7.30 in the morning and I was expecting an answer phone!).

The restaurant is a few miles outside Scarborough and as we were celebrating we booked a taxi, which turned up a few minutes late. When we arrived at the Anvil the lady who finally came over to see us ( it would be incorrect of me to use the term "greet" although that's what one should expect when they arrive somewhere like this), was less than friendly. Because we were nearly 10 minutes late we were chastised and told that "lots has gone on since your original booking time"! My friends and I almost fell over! We asked if we could have a drink whilst waiting for whatever we were supposed to be waiting for and were handed a wine list, whilst standing at the bar with nowhere to sit. Then another lady took our wine order and told us that we could sit and wait for it at our table if we wanted!! We couldn't believe that we hadn't been offered the opportunity to sit at the table when we arrived, as it was evidently free. We need never have been made to feel uncomfortable, we couldn't understand why when we arrived we hadn't been seated, informed that we could order our drinks but food would take a little longer in view of the time, and just been allowed to relax.

Unfortunately this start to the evening ruined it for us. The food was ok, but not with the taxi fare on top, because the service was so disappointing. Had it not began so badly I could well have been writing an altogether different review.

Can't rate this restuarant highly wnough. Have been about 5 times now and each time is as good as before. Mark and Alex have created a gem of a place - a clever and imaginative menu with lots of choice but not too much to befuddle you, excellent cask beer choices, a great and reasonable wine list with changing specials. Nice atmosphere with log fires and great efficient service. We ate twice recently while staying across the road at Foxholm B&B (see separate 5* review) so it's a perfect combination if you like comfortable accommodation and only 50 yds from a brilliant restaurant with no driving to worry!

Hi to all,
Used to work on the golf course just a five minute walk away.Must say it is all a little stuck-up,staff are somewhat rude. Its a case of "if your face fits", scenario.food is good and beer reasonable.
odd opening times too.
