Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

This is a lovely castle to visit on a nice day. It covers a big area, there is a ruined keep to climb up and other remains to explore. You get good views of the bays to the north and south.

Beauty of a spot to visit, as with anything else historical you do get charged a lot to see and touch our heritage'lovely views and very scenic , car parking was simple just down the road literally , the earphones and story telling electronic gizmo stopped working after 5 minutes over worked rather like myself!! Would still go back though as the view is beautiful and worth the money enjoy

Visited on a sunny October Day. Good welcome at the entrance and free audio tour. The views from the headland were fabulous you can see the two bays from a viewpoint. Plenty of notice boards with good information on. The site is managed and administered by English Heritage. Plenty of nice clean toilets. All in all a fab visit.
