Owner description: BLUE BADGE PARKING ONLY IS AVAILABLE. OTHER PARKING PLEASE USE LOCAL PAY & DISPLAY. Head through the imposing gatehouse and step into 3,000 years of history. Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

Even on a cold wet day the walk up the hill to the Castle was well worth it. The audio transcriptions really make you feel as if you are reliving some historic moments. Nice cafe and gift shop with helpful staff

The castle is a nice place to visit if you want to do something different and educational. They have run a passport system for children to attend events at a lower prices across other local historic attractions. The passport gets a stamp at each event/location. They bring history alive through various role play, battle re-enactments and special events through the ages. These events are always very well organised with activities for all ages of children. In the last couple of years we have been to many of these events and always enjoyed them. They have audio tours that you can hire and take around the castle with you if you like. If you like history and heritage it's worth a look.

Although the castle is very ruined the audio descriptions and other panel descriptions all round the site are excellent and the views from the site and ruins themselves are wonderful. Great walks round the walls too.
