The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

We really enjoyed walking up to and around Scarborough Castle. It's headland location is stunning and it's history is very interesting. The audioguides, which are included in the entry fees, provided interesting and informative commentary.

We visited the castle on a gloriously sunny day and were looking forward to experiencing a bit of history. Unfortunately this was a wine-tasting day and the young girl promoting English Heritage wine was very enthusiastic and amiable. After sampling most of her wine and succumbing to buying a few bottles I was in need of a rest and retired to sunbathing. What we did see of the Castle was well-maintained and staff very knowledgeable.

Amazed at the history of the castle. Beautiful views of Scarborough from all areas of the castle. Lovely walk ways in the castle grounds. Excellent value compared to other historic sites.
