It is nicknamed the "cinder track" and it is well named! Although we were all on MTB bikes (apart from one who forgot t change his "skinny tyres" on his hybrid bike!) we still managed to get 5 punctures between five riders - three of the group didn't get any!
It's a great ride via the old railway track with superb views. If you plan to do the ride both ways - only 42 miles maximum - I recommend starting earlier than we did c.11.30 am due to a little problem on the York by-pass where the bike rack decided to shed one of the bikes so we had to hire another -a long story!
It is not easy... we are experienced riders and it can be quite tough in places especially up the rise from Robin Hoods Bay to Ravenscar - this was on our way back - but there is a welcome recovery pint at the Ravenscar hotel at the top. The highlights are the coastal views from Ravenscar and the famous Whitby fish & chips.
If you plan a laeisurely ride over 2 days i.e. there and back it would be a really good ride for any standard of cyclist and there are many stopping points if you research via the website http://www.aucu61.dsl.pipex.com/Scarborough%20Whitby.htm
Good luck and enjoy!

Went to see Status quo and we realised that the tickets did not give a time for the concert. We arrived at 7.30pm in the middle of the warm up band - so missed some of that. Our seats in the white block were very central awith a good view. The large screens were good enabling you to see that bit more. The theatre does not allow you to take your own food/drink in and we found the prices quite high - well in fact we only bought a bottle of water and that was £1.50! Fortunately the weather did hold out with no rain which was good but it is always worth taking a waterproof jacket as there is no shelter from the elements.Ponchos are sold 'on site' if you are caught out. As usual at these events there nwas a bit of a queue for the ladies - but then on our way out we did find additional porta loos but there was no mention of these. We thoroughly enjoyed the concert and think it's brilliant that Scarborough Council have re-vamped the Open Air Theatre and long may it last with events for all age groups. A lovely evening.

Cycled from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby and back today on this trail. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day which meant views were superb. The track is more suited to hybrid and mountain style bikes as the surface is quite rough in parts which means you need to concentrate to avoid pot holes and ditches. The trail is very worn in parts and I would imagine would be very challenging to ride after some wet weather. Today was ok as it was dry. Would love to return another day and cycle a different section. Parked in the station car park at Robin Hood's Bay which costs £4 for 6 hours which is reasonable. After a ride on the trail a walk down the hill to the village is well worth it but the hill is VERY steep!

Great for biking. So enjoyed. 23 miles for fish and chips. 15 miles back to the pub for a pint then all down hill back. Great views and with great weather a lovely ride out.

The walk from Scarborough is wonderful though a bit difficult to find the access in town. Once out on the track it is sublime. I must mention though that some reviews have this confused. This is an old disused railway with no tracks. It is for walking or cycling. How I wish otherwise. The railway referred to in other reviews is the north Yorkshire railway running from Pickering to Whitby.
