We went on a 3night dancing holiday to this hotel, this was our second such break, our other 2years previous.Yes standards have slipped since our last visit, but value for money was still excellant.we arrived, tired again!!( my age I guess) after a 134 mile journey, reception were good and soon had us on our way to room 101,Yes really, passing many grand rooms on the front part, yep your`ve guessed our`s was around a corner!! but wow a huge room, large bathroom, bath and in bath shower, large enough for a party,a large bed ,chairs to sit,and not least a 50" television, and our own cocktail bar!! only had tea /coffee unfortunatley.Having had a nice long soak we ventured down to the bar which was part of a large lounge with views over the sea and harbour, yes the windows did need replacing,a good clean might help, but as they face a main one way road which gets very busy with buses and other traffic, but lounge is quiet apart from most evenings when live music is avaiable.this hotel is huge, and bedrooms do vary, ours had a view of a fire escape( always handy!! and a few flower tubs,no sea view but heck a room is only to sleep in,other facilities are available a pool which is due to be refurbished, and a gym to,neither of which we used.So having a drink in hand we entered a large adjacent dining room, plenty of space, nicely laid out, starters were available, good choice,we had the soup excellant, and then ordered from a menu, with a choice of 5 main meals something for everyone,it arrived quite quickly with the vegatables separately, nice and hot, this was followed by a choice of 8 help yourself desserts, wow . Our ballroom was excellant if a bit too hot,and very enjoyable thanks John and Hazel,we finished our evening off in the lounge bar, listening to Doug singing,he will sing most things,or put on music to dance to, on the smallish floor.Next morning breakfast choice of cereals, piping hot bacon eggs etc,wow I even put on weight .Parking is good with 3 large car parks quite close, parking fee`s thru hotel varied from £7.50 per day.To sum up yes hotel does look tired in places, but the staff always smiled and helped you if possible, its very central near shops, beach, with nearby lifts,We only hope the new owners do NOT spoil the ambience of this hotel with too many changes!!

Room Tip: Try the suite`s on the front, wow the bath looked great!! and the view even better..

Perhaps if our stay had been booked a 100 years earlier, we may have experienced what the hotel promises.
The entrance hall flatters to deceive with the illusion of former grandeur, but once you step out of the lift and make your way through the water stained grubby corridors, any illusions are well and truly shattered. This wasn't the biggest fault though, the room was reasonably clean. The problem was the bathroom! It was older than I am, there again, that wasn't the problem. The real fault became apparent at around 2 am when the noise coming from the plumbing almost made the windows rattle. This went on at regular intervals until the sun came up. It sounded like the "Queen Mary" coming into dock. I recorded the noise and played it to the woman on reception, her response was " it sounds like a ship...you should've let us know, sorry..."
Now what a night porter could've been expected to do in the small hours, with what is obviously a longstanding issue, I do not know.
The rooms at this side of the hotel are let to guests with no regard for their comfort or well being and something should be done to remedy the awfulness of our experience.
The last word is regarding the tariff. For what they charge, I would recommend staying in a 4 star guest house, you would save money

yes it;s a bit tired but it's in a good location, the food was great and the service was good. For the price we paid you really could't complain. We had a quiet room at the back and it was fine, refurbished large bathroom and a good size room, the floor sloped badly so the wardrobe was about 6 inches higher at one end. We had a good 2 night break and were very happy with the hotel, especially the food.

One night stay during Christmas week was lovely, great bargain price. If you like Victorian architecture, this hotel is lovely. Despite the windows needing a good clean, the rest of the place is tidy, albeit tired in places. The dinner and breakfast was excellent quality food! Good bar and dining room, staff very helpful in all areas. Thanks to all at this hotel!

Room Tip: We had the cheapest room by choice so can't comment on sea views etc. Our room was adequate for...

My wife & I attended a wedding at the hotel and decided to stay overnight....mistake.!
Once you get past the grand staircase the hotel is shabby, poorly maintained and a disappointment.
The room we had was dire,black mould in bathroom,rusty fittings,broken lamps,no valance on beds,peeling wallpaper,signs of leaks,peeling paper on ceiling,no hot water,ill fitting windows,noisy etc.etc.
The hotel needs a lot of money spending on it to refurbish and bring it up to anywhere near the standard it obviously used to be in days gone by.
Also be aware that there is a 2% charge on your rate if you pay by card ( credit or debit ) and you have to pay when you check in not on the way out, which is inconvienient if hubby is finding somewhere to park the car.
Have to say though the breakfast was good.

Room Tip: Ask if there are any refurbished rooms !!!!

Booked in for between Xmas and new year break. Had three rooms one was freezing cold, another smelt of stewed cabbage, the third was a twin but one single bed was in a separate room only just big enough for the bed! More lie bed in a cupboard. All very tired, dirty carpets, holes in curtais and not v nice at all. Know we only paid £39 a room so should not have expected much but it was so disappointing we checked out and are now relaxing in the Crown more expensive but worth every single penny.
