“Bronze Medal for The Royal”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

With the Olympic flame burning bright we thought we would rise to the challenge of a two night stay in The Royal...having read some of the reviews, we knew we were heading for Eddie The Eagle territory rather than Usain Bolt but if you just want a basic base for town and beach then The Royal just about makes the podium! True, it's a fading shadow of previous glories but the staircase and chandelier when you enter reception are amazing...and the hotel retains this 'stepping back in time' theme when you see the decor and fixtures in your room! It's all a tad tired and shabby but we asked for a sea view and we got a rather splendid one. Alas, we also had nesting seagulls so pack those earplugs!

Most of the staff were fairly disinterested in the guests and breakfast was a chaotic scrum for tables and coffee...marmalade in help-yourself industrial icecreamtubs was a 'holiday first' but certainly made us appreciate those mini-screw top jars we have so often taken for granted.

The lounge areas and bars are spacious (although this did mean we had to endure children getting into the Olympic spirit by playing tig one night while their parents drank lager oblivious...) - however, you do get a good view of the sunset and the local hoodies gathering on the benches opposite the hotel. The entertainment was a man singing and playing his guitar who seemed to think racist jokes were still acceptable in the 21st century - rather alarming...but on the plus side, his warbling prevented further games of tig!

If your stay in Scarborough is likely to involve plenty of time away from the hotel, then his is an adequate option but don't arrive expecting gold medal quality otherwise you will be disappointed...

We have just returned from a two night stay (5/8/12 to 7/8/12) at the Royal and I have to say that our experience was much better than most of the reviews below. We paid £120 for two nights including breakfast and were in room 348 which was very clean and in good order. The bathroom was a good size and also very clean. Yes the floor was a little uneven and the view was not much to look at, but we came away to get out there and enjoy ourselves and not sit in the room and look out of the window !! The staff we came into contact with from the reception to the waiting on staff and room service made us feel most welcome. Breakfast was hot as were the plates and there was a good choice ( even for my gluten free partner ). Thermos jug's for tea and coffee were provided on the first morning which was a bit of a pain due to the fact that some selfish guests seemed to think they had the right to take the jugs and keep them on their table, leaving the rest of us with only a limited amount of jugs to use, but that problem was addressed on the second morning as we were greeted by waiting staff and took your tea or coffee order and served pots to your table. In conclusion I would say that the value for money was good, as was the whole experience, yes the hotel is a little tired in places but this cannot all be blamed entirely on the current owners as I am sure it's previous one's would not have been pouring money into a property they wanted to of load. If you compare the price we paid to the hotels in the same area it was great value. Oh and as for the people who complained about the seagulls, they are part and parcel of the Scarborough experience, regardless of which hotel you stay in.

Best location and good breakfast but thats the only good thing to say about this place!
Room was NOT worth the £100 I paid for one night! Tired and in desperate need of a refurb! Didn't read the reviews before I stayed here! The bathroom in the room was better than the bedroom which was dated and worn.
Do not pay the extra £20 for a sea view if you book on the Internet as we overheard 2 couples complaining that they had paid the extra but not had a sea view, to which the receptionist replied that it was not guaranteed! Even if you paid the extra!!
After saying all this though the location was good and the breakfast lovely, with something on offer for everybody.
Will not stay here again even if it was the only hotel with rooms left! Would go elsewhere!

My husband and I stayed here again last week for two nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We stayed a couple of years ago and found the hotel much as it was last time which was good as we enjoyed our stay then-however one point I wasn't happy about was the fact the jacuzzi downstairs wasn't working as it wasn't two years previously when we went- I was really looking forward to using it after a tiring day-so felt a little disappointed at that. The hotel is a little dated inside but I feel that adds to it's charm- I have read others reviews on here about it being dirty -we didn't find that our room was perfectly clean and acceptable. The breakfast in the morning was buffet style and was fine the only thing I didn't like was the orange juice as it wasn't freshly squeezed as I like but I understand that would be far too costly and time consuming to do that. Overall I would book to stay here again as it met myself and my husbands needs- I just hope the jacuzzi will be working next time............pleaseeeeee!:)

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room as ours overlooked the kitchen -not picturesque as you can imagine :)

This hotel has a truly magnificent 'fin de siecle' foyer , absolutely stunning..........after that it tends to go downhill !! Reception is friendly and helpful ,but I'm still waiting for the porter to bring our suitcases up to the room !! He could still be chatting to the barman for all I know ! I went and got them myself rather than break up their conversation .The room was spacious and really very nice ( No fridge ).Clean but subsequent housekeeping not up to scratch , glasses not washed ,lotion bottles not filled , bed made so badly that I thought that someone else must have used it whilst we were out ! A great full English serve yourself breakfast...... .But kept running out of things.....ran out of glasses , ran out of eggs ,ran out of mushrooms, ran out of bread , ran out of coffee .......no proactive management of the restaurant . Don't know what the restau manager does ....didn't see him until 9;30. Most of problems down to lack of staff and untrained staff as well as lack of communication and poor reactive management. Clientele mainly Brits so thought it all a huge joke .....not so a couple of our continental cousins who found the experience "incroyable "! " But you gets what you pays for." We had a Groupon voucher for two nights and it was excellent value .If we'd paid the rack rate I would have been really disappointed .A lot of coach holidays use this hotel and it can be very, very busy .The hotel is a bit tired ; some rooms have been refurbished and are really OK .Its not the kind of hotel you would take anyone to impress or romance them ,but its location is good , 100yds from town centre yet in a quiet position; lift down to beach across the road .The pity is that this could really be a fantastic hotel..............it has a lot going for it but is just so badly managed and maintained . It would be a great subject for ITV's ' Hotel Inspector '. BUT....... would I go back ? Yes, I would ..........if the price was right .(Da Claudio's Italian round the corner is good value if you have a Tastecard )

My wife won £500 recently on a lottery game so we decided to treat ourselves to a weekend break and we had the misfortune to choose The Royal at Scarborough, We paid £218 for a two night stay in a sperior sea view room with breakfast so we expected it to be good,
When we were showed to our room it was the most tatty, scruffy room we had been put into and we are both in our fifties now, the carpet was ill fitting the plaster on the ceiling was all cracked the windows were so dirty you could barely see through them and there was an awful fusty smell also i dont think the shower head had been cleaned for twelve months'
My wife decided she would not put up with this and went to see the duty manager who came up to the room and came out with the amazing statement that " i have stopped in a hotel in barcelona that was a mess" anyway to give him his due he agreed to move us to a suite for our second night which was so much better however this does not cover up the fact that this hotel is a tatty scruffy run down shabby place that needs massive refurbishment also just to add that the restaurant is run down with dirty old windows that you can barely see through for muck also the breakfast items were cold and the orange juice warm.
I strongly advise you DO NOT STOP AT THIS HOTEL

After having stayed here the year before last under the previous management, we booked a repeat weekend visit expecting to enjoy it as much as last time. This did not turn out to be the case. Whilst there were positives about the stay, such as the breakfast and relaxed drinks in the bar in the evening, the decline of the physical aspects of the hotel outweighed them. Having read reviews before our first visit and finding them harsh Inhabe previously given The Royal a much better review so it is with sadness that I feel the need to say the opposition this time. The interior is extremely shabby with chipped doorframes in corridors and tatty carpets. The lift had now been fixed but felt like a gamble getting in it due to a horrible jolt or two on arriving at your floor! We entered our room and found the bed and bathroom to be reasonably clean but found it hard to ignore huge brown water stains from the ceiling down to the plug sockets! There were large amounts of wallpaper hanging off and dubious stains on the ceiling (room 311). Remnants (congealed empty pump bottles) of toiletries provided under previous management we still in the bathroom in rusty fittings and there was a distinct lack of loo roll! We decided that given we had got a reasonable deal through Superbreak that we'd grin and put up with the flaws though we would have been very unhappy if we'd had to pay full rate. In addition to the main parts of the building being shabby, the pool area was just unpleasant! The water was cloudy and appeared dirty and the whirlpool that had been broken two years ago was STILL broken! There were huge chunks of plaster missing out of the walls and rusty loungers surrounding the pool. Both of us managed a short dip before feeling it would be better to get out of that dodgy water and be thankful we hadn't had to pay for it! Finally, the location is pretty noisy, being near bars etc and the crumbling creaky windows keep none of the noise out! I feel really sad at having to write this review as I'm not one to complain and we don't consider ourselves to be as picky as some people who you find checking for flecks of dust etc but we really felt that this visit would make us seeks alternative accommodation next time. This hotel has the potential to be really lovely with a bit of care and TLC. It would be nice to see it as grand as it would have been in its earlier years rather than getting worse. Having stayed there under previous management and now with Britannia, Britannia seem to just be running it down and putting nothing in.
