“outstanding location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2010

A hotel of great character in an outstanding location, set in rolling parkland. A good option if wanting to make Scarborough the base for your holiday or if you simply want a tranquil, secluded getaway.
Our room was large with a massive bay window overlooking the grounds. Loads of storage space, flat screen tv, huge comfortable squashy sofa.
Two single beds joined into a double where the edges made an unfortunate ridge in the middle. Some of the furnishings and furniture need updating, although a few minor improvements, such as adding a floor lamp to read by, would have made all the difference. (Potential guests also please note: there is no WiFi access).
But this is still a comfortable, cozy hotel overall, with the inglenook fireplace and the garden room being particularly nice assets. The staff were good, in particular the manager and head barman who are genuinely interested in offering the best service and attention. The restaurant is pleasant, and despite some hiccups with the food, there were some good dishes on offer, and the banana-butterscotch crumble was memorable. We and other guests felt that the brand new menu is too extensive to be consistently managed and they would do well to revert to the previous regime which included a table d'hote and garnered the hotel AA rosettes. Breakfast is fine although the 'buffet' part of it is lacklustre with a poor selection of continental items and fruit. This place tries hard and has the potential to be better in a few respects. It certainly made for a memorable stay and I would definitely consider a return visit.

firstly when reading this review i would like to say this is a true representation of the hotel by a couple 1 in there thirties and 1 in there fourties who regularly go away and expect a decent standard of accommodation at least to the same quality of there home .we checked into this hotel friday 16th april 2010 for a romantic weekend away. as we approached the hotel it looked amazing from the outside, great building and grounds but that was seriously the best thing about the hotel. on arrival we were quickly checked in by the receptionist who showed us to our room , on the way up the stairs there was an awful smell and the receptionist commented on the smell which she said "was a whole can of fly spray" i found it strange that she should comment. we then arrived at our room in the attic room 17 .as we walked in i was disgusted the room had 2 damp patches and smelt severley of damp it was 10ft by 8ft including the bathroom. the baths enamel had come off the bath and the sink was covered in stains and the bin had tea stains all down it . the room and bathroom looked like it hadnt been decorated since the 1980 s . the wardrobes paint was also coming off . i was totally mortified as the room looked like a £15 b and b . we went to reception and asked for the manager as i wanted to go home as this genuinely wasnt the standard i was expecting . the manager came and asked what the problem was after explaining she said thats the only room i have so i told her i wanted a refund as id rather stay at my own home than in a sub standard quality room, she told me we couldnt have a refund as we had to write to head office which i found dispicable and i told her so. she then miraculously found us another room so my partner went to see it . it was slightly better no damp patches but still smelt of damp after our 5 hr journey we decided to stay as we were pretty much stuck there as there was no guarantee of a refund . room 19 was bigger but again the bathroon carpet sodden with water created the damp smell . we went down for our evening meal and went into the conservatory till our table was ready and there was dirty cutlery on the floor and about 15 flys on it amongst others flying around which was horrendous . the food in the hotel without doubt is great with a lovely choice cant fault that aspect at all of the hotel. . saturday evening again waiting in the conservatory for our meal and the flys were back in force we counted nearly 30 dead ones in 15 minuites. our meal saturday was ruined by flys constantly flying around us and then they landed in the meal which just ruined our meal. we have sent 2 emails to the head office requesting some explanations of the poor substandard rooms and we have had an absolutely appalling response from joan [-] who is the chairman virtually calling us liars saying no 1 else complained but i spoke to 2 other couples who were there who were disgusted 2 . anne the manager is patronising and quite rude but the staff especially clive were lovely as was the food . one member of staff actually told us that the rooms were always complained about and they were used to it. on leaving anne showed us the suite they have which was amazing . if the rest of the rooms were done to a basic version of that the hotel would be great as at the minuite a travellodge isof a far better standard than the disgusting rooms they offer. please be warned before you travel here .

I am sorry that on this occasion we did not deliver to your expectations whilst staying at Wrea Head and, although I find many of your criticisms difficult to accept, we do value your and all of our guests’ constructive comments and observations.

Wrea Head is over 100 years old and was originally built as a family home before being converted into a country house hotel in the 1970s. As such all of our bedrooms are unique in size and shape. For many people this is part of the charm of this beautiful building. I can only apologise that you were not satisfied with your room, but as you mention in your review, we did do our best to find an alternative room, to try and meet your expectations, but options were very limited as the hotel was almost full.

To refer to the room as 'like a £15 B&B' and that it 'smelt severely of damp' is simply unfair and untrue. I can only suggest that people’s expectations and taste vary and, as you can see from previous comments, the majority of our guests find our rooms to be most acceptable. Perhaps next time, if you decide to stay with us again, you may consider booking one of our superior rooms which offer slightly more spacious accommodation.

As far as the flies are concerned, we are a country house hotel, so we do get the odd creepy crawly visitor from time to time – but as for how many you counted, well I'll have to take your word for that as I've never noticed this swarm myself - again I can only apologise if this spoilt the enjoyment of your stay.

One thing I have to say is that the personal remarks included within your review are somewhat below the belt, unnecessary and unfair.

In conclusion I can only offer you my sincere apologies and can assure others reading this review that experiences like yours are rare and our rooms are not 'always complained about'. Of course you don’t have to take my word for it, just take a moment to read our many other fantastic reviews.

we booked this hotel on the night before we arrived and there was only room 9 left and we were advised it was a small room but were offered a brilliant rate. The room was furnished to a very high standard and it was immaculately clean. The place is one of the best hotels I have stopped and the food is wonderful with the best breakfast I have ever had.

We had booked this couple of days as a birthday treat for my husband through an offer on travel zoo Two nights dinner bad and breakfast ,tickets for sea life centre bucksfizz breakfast and cream tea!!
On arival the hotel looked lovly from outside and i think thats where we should have stayed.
Reception was busy with staff as they were on change over we were told the tickets were no longer available for the sea life centre and that the extras we would have would use the money up so no refund.
We were shown to our room nobody asked if we had luggage to carry "this is your room" was all that was said no the nearest fire exit is to your left our right basicly had there been a fire it would have been each for thereown.
While sitting in our room a letter was brought round saying that guest on the all inclusive db&b package would have a £30pp limit on the menu this sounds ok till you read the menu and see that the price of steak is £26.95 see where the exras will be spent.
Drinks: bottle of becks £4.00 White winespritzer £5.50 extras
We decided as we had been driving to have a shower before dinner this also proved to be a proble unless we wanted to catch Legionnaires' disease from the dirty mould ridden shower head which i have taken pictures of.My husband was so appauled he unscrewed it and took it down to reception where he was greated with the manageress stuffing her face with a scone and the receptionist sitting with his back to the counter she gave him a jab with her pen as her mouth was full he turned around and tutted as we had interupted his time my husband asked if we could have a new shower head and was given one.
The next day our shower head was back havin been bleached alnight!!
the hotel was full of flys we were going to have our cream and scones in the conseratory however when we seen the amount of dead flys on the fllor and seats we decided against it the housekeeping staff must have missed that room as they had not long left.
Basicly havin spoken to other guest we would never ever go back or recommend this hotel to anyone .

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I can only apologise that on this occasion we did not deliver to our own high expectations. Where I can I will address some of your concerns in this reply as well as putting to rest some of your aspersions.

Firstly the offer you had booked represented extremely good value and, as you correctly say, your booking did indeed also included tickets to the local Sea Life centre. Our partnership with this third party ended earlier this year and therefore anyone already having purchased these tickets had the cost automatically credited to their room account to be used against any extras, such as food or drinks, purchased during their stay – so to say you did not receive a refund is simply untrue.

All rooms display information on 'what to do in the case of fire' as per our fire certificate regulations – to my knowledge it is not standard policy at most hotels to do an air hostess style safety presentation as you are shown to your room.

All guests who have booked a DB&B package are allocated a £30 per person spend towards our restaurant menu, with which guests can choose to have a 3 course meal, or perhaps just 2-courses instead treating themselves to one of the more expensive items from the main course selection. The dish you identified, to be fair, is the most expensive dish on the menu.

The £30 allocation, for example, would allow you select a 3-course meal of: Ham Hock, Chedder Cheese & Pickled Onion Terrine served with Piccalilli, followed by 8oz Ribeye Steak with Pomme Pont Neuf, Fried Mushrooms & Roasted Tomato and then Warm Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert – and this is by no means the only combination that totals under £30!

As far as the shower head is concerned our housekeeping department strive to meet high standards and it is upsetting when we do not deliver. I have brought your comments to the housekeeper’s attention who will deal with them in the appropriate manner and, since bringing it to our attention, I have insisted that all shower heads are checked on a regular basis in the future, to prevent such an incident from happening again.

In conclusion I can only offer you my sincere apologies and can assure others reading this review that experiences like yours are extremely rare. If you are at all concerned about visiting Wrea Head after reading this review please do take a moment to read the many other fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor where we are rated one of the best hotels in the area.

We spent a weekend in this delightful hotel with friends and found the location, food and service to be first rate throughout. The welcome we received from hotel manager Ann Hodgeson and her staff made us feel like welcome friends rather than guests and the cuisine on offer had something to tempt all palates.
Anyone staying at Wrea Head is promised a real treat!
