We stayed here on 22/02/13 for probably the 9th or 10th time (that say's it all) we love it, it is so relaxing and feels like returning home!
we stayed in room number 4 it was so comfortable, and both the room and bed were enormous, the room has been rfurbished (but not the bathroom, which is a little tired) however this Hotel is extreemly good value for money, which explains why it was fully booked. Anne is always so attentive,we were sorry to miss her on this occasion! however the new owner is very friendly, he is breathing new life into the place with his enthusiasm and refurbishment.
Evening dinner was exallent,as was the Breakfast, I did wander how the man serving at breakfast would cope with the full dining room (another staff member needed to help him, I think)
however he coped very well and all food was correct as orderd, hot and fresh.
All staff are very good and pleasant!
Cant wait to return!!!

Room Tip: Romm 4 great if you like extra space

Happened on this gem whilst needing to overnight during a recent business trip. The detour from our meeting location was well worth the journey. Great staff, great food (moreish homemade piccalilli with the ploughmans starter followed by a fabulous shin of beef) - wonderful location, incredible and characterful property. The original rooms are a tad tired - but they are still large, clean, comfortable and well appointed. It's clear that the current, unobtrusive refurbishment that the new owners are undertaking will address this and ultimately every room will be luxurious and unique. You get a real taste of the completed work in the the refurbished bar/lounge - which is an incredible space. Hard to leave - will be returning with my wife for a weekend break later this year.

We have just enjoyed our third stay at the Wrea Head Hotel. There is always a warm welcome from Anne and her team and the food is excellent. The breakfasts cater for all tastes and the dinner menu offers a varied choice. The hotel is half way through a refurbishment programme which continues with no inconvenience or noise to affect the guests. The rooms which have been refurbished are tastefully finished and extremely stylish. The setting of the Wrea Head is ideal for walks in the countryside or along the beaches at Scarborough or Whitby. The invigorating coastal walks from Cloughton along the Cleveland Way give fabulous views across local headlands. Staying at the Wrea Head is really enjoyable and we are already looking forward to our next stay.

Room Tip: We have stayed in three different rooms and they have all been very comfortable

For dinner starters, the smoked salmon with horseradish, was dry and looked like it had been scraped out of somewhere long forgotten. The horseradish proved to be a squirt of 'cream' from a can. I had the ricotta, mozarella and spinach lasagne and was presented with a huge slab of tasteless mousse. When asked if everything was alright, I said that I couldnt believe the chef had tasted this dish, it was so poor. Nothing was said or offered to put things right. I was very hungry and had been really looking forward to dinner- it had sounded very appetising on the menu and the dining room looked elegant and promised good things. However, in the morning, every item of the cooked breakfast tasted of old fat and smelled unappetising- tomatoes, mushrooms ( seemed to be out of a tin) awful greasy fried bread and fried potatoes drenched in fat- inedible. On the plus side the buffet breakfast was pleasant and I enjoyed the muesli and fruit. But back again to disappointment coffee- tasted like it had been boiled up in the dregs of an old machine, which had never been cleaned. Bed was comfortable; We were in Room 8- a 'superior double' which was quite small for a double. The drapes and bed looked new and clean, and walls fresh and newly painted, but there were gaps and cracks along the windows and in the bathroom- so was it 'newly refurbished' as advertised, or not?. The shower was poor and I couldnt get it hot even on the highest temperature (9) There was nowhere to put clothes in the bathroom, no hooks. So not thought out well for guests comfort. Staff were nice and smiley. I like the communal areas and fires. But altogether, the web site gives the prospective customer expectations - and it does not meet these. It is trying to advertise itself as a Fawsley Hall Hotel equivalent and it is no where near. Disappointing. Sack the chef? Make the food good, advertise more honestly and it could work a lot better.

First I would like to thank you for your comments re our staff but I would also like to review your other observations. The room you stayed in was not a refurbished room nor was it advertised as such but as you point out it is in a good decorative condition but the windows are original stone mullions so will show signs of age. Our web site that you also mention does have a clear description of each room and the date of any refurbishment so I don’t know what web site you have been looking at that made you think it had been refurbished.

I am sorry you did not enjoy your evening meal but you do seem to be in the minority if you go by other peoples comments on this site. In fact your husband had commented that he had enjoyed his meal but you seem to have missed this fact off. We are always happy to change a meal if it’s not to the customers liking but we may have failed it assessing this situation.
As for the breakfast our bacon and sausages, tomato are all grilled other than the fried bread by definition. Mushrooms are freshly cooked in butter and we don’t have any tinned veg in the hotel. All veg is delivered fresh and in time with our restoration of the kitchen garden we hope to have them directly from the grounds. The coffee is fresh ground each morning we don’t use any pre ground coffee but its strength may not have been to your liking.

We don’t compare ourselves to other hotels but your comparison of us over Fawsley seems odd when they have less than half our number of customer reviews and many more unfavourable comments! As always we leave it to people reading the reviews to make the decision based on the 800+ positive comments on this site versus the 22 negative that your one falls into.

We do take peoples comments seriously but I always find it interesting when people’s comments and rating are more vindictive than constructive as it seems to point to another agenda.

First stay here since change of ownership. Setting and outstanding views are, of course, unchanged. Staff remain friendly and helpful. Refurbishment is being done unobtrusively and with no inconvenience to guests. Superior room very comfortable and excellent value. A lovely, relaxing country house hotel..

We returned to Wrea Head Hall for our 3rd New Year, the first under new owners Jerry and Mark. What a great celebration, we weren't disappointed. Our hosts joined in with the dancing and dined with guests whilst Ann (manageress) was her usual 'fabulous' self. The ongoing refurbishments are of a very high standard and we would heartily recommend this Country House for it's fine dining, hospitality and the felling of 'being in your own home' rather than just a hotel. Thank you to all staff for a great time. Looking forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: As each of the rooms are being or have been refurbished they have a certain theme i.e Room 4 being t...

This hotel is undergoing total refurbishment and when finished will be fabulous but none of this work affects the guests or their accessibility to public areas in any way. The staff are very friendly and competent (especially the waiters) which together with comfortable rooms, attractive setting and delicious food makes for a very enjoyable and stylish break.

Room Tip: All rooms will be quiet. Look at the Wrea Head website to chose a room.
