“Stunning views”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

This hotel has a *** rating. The room and linen were spotlessly clean and we were fortunate to have a sea view overlooking the harbour and castle. I would not recommend this hotel for anyone who has mobility problems as it is located on the top of the South Cliff (hence the stunning views) and has a series of steps and steep slopes to encounter but a very short trip by taxi overcomes this problem. The bath/shower room was rather basic but quite acceptable. The dining room was spacious and overlooking the South Bay. The food was not gourmet style but more like home cooking. The staff were always cheerful and ever willing to help in whatever way they could. There was entertainment on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights from 8pm. Another feature of the hotel was the large veranda/balcony which overlooked the South Bay and was ideal for having drinks watching the sun set. The hotel is located on a quiet road so does not have a problem with noise pollution. I have been to several of the more popular larger hotels in Scarborough and overall have definitely found this to be one of the best.

Room Tip: Some first floor rooms have a small balcony to supplement the superb panoramic view.

Spent one night on a coach trip. Room was fine very clean, bathroom spotless. A little dated. Hotel itself was good. Food was acceptable but boring. Entertainment was provided and although not many people were there had a good night singer was very good. For those with mobility problems this hotel might not be suitable due to steps and steep walk from town.

Stayed at this Hotel 21st to 24th July with my Daughter. We were in a twin room with stunning views of the Bay, a traditional Hotel and yes a little TLC is needed nothing much but adds to the character of these old buildings i think. The most inportant to us was the fact it was spotlessly clean & Food excellent 5*,because being on a special diet is always a concern and have to be realy carefull, but the staff couldnt have been better and nothing was too much trouble for them. It is a beautifully postioned Hotel, but NOT for people with restricted mobility, i had a wheelchair but my Daughter even struggled to push that. They seem to have alot of coach trips in so a large number of guests were elderly, it didnt bother us but the Hotel was quiet at night. Tues & Weds night had a Singer/Comedian on which were thought were good and sang along but we were in the miner and most went to bed which was a shame as the singer did his best. Would reccommend this Hotel and would deff go back for a quiet weekend away again.

Room Tip: Rooms with seaview the best.

I was in the Esplanade for one night for a congress and really had no idea what to expect ...Reception was very friendly and the staff helpful and the room was bright and cheerful with excellent soft furnishings and that fabulous view..the fittings could do with an upgrade ( shower difficult to regulate) ..The breakfast was excellent ...for the money I couldn't fault it ....a bit faded glory ...but then that's Scarborough........ I would say again

Spent 6 nights here. Great view from bedroom which was well decorated and clean. The shower how ever was not good and a daily attack from a shower curtain was awful.
The food started off great and the breakfasts daily were excellent but the evening meal! Very poor. Veg over cooked and never really hot. Unimaginative chef for combinations of main and veg. Sweets were probably bought in and the last but one day there was no cornflakes available - they had run out!
The staff had a attitude problem and were there under sufferance as it appeared to us. There does not seem to be any management control or guidance and it looks as it the hotel are struggling to keep afloat!

Room Tip: Sea view to make up for everything else/

We stayed here as part of a coach package holiday.
The hotel is at the top of a cliff, so good views, over the main seafront and coastline, over to Scarborough Castle.
It's value for money I think - we had a dinner, bed and breakfast package. The breakfast was very good, and the dinner was a traditional meal, 3 choices for each course, as well as a salad main course. Well presented, with bowls of fresh vegetables.
Service was efficient and with a smile, linen tableclothes, jugs of water on the table - all good.
Rooms were a little bit 'tired' - hopelessly inefficient showers, but plenty of hot water and towels.
All the staff were very professional - friendly without being familiar and worked incredibly hard - it almost seems that everyone was doing two jobs, and were always kept busy.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room

We often pop in here for Sunday lunch as we live close by. Today we arrived early for our booking as it was so hot outside, but Catherine the restaurant manager took that in her stride and showed us to a lovely table in the showpiece glass panoramic corner, which has fantastic views over the bay. We opted for the starter of Mellon ( which was so refreshing on such a hot day) and then the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. We've had Sunday lunch here many times and I can honestly say that the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is the very best I have ever tasted. You also get a large dish of assorted vegetables; which are nicely cooked and presented. We had a bottle of Pinot Grigio with our lunch and all in all it was a wonderful dining experience.
