“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2012

We arrived on the 24June and was delighted with our room, it had super views an was very very clean and fresh. The meals were very good and the staff polite and very helpfull. All areas downstairs including the dining room were clean and welcoming. The reception staff were most informative and friendly as was the porter. We will definately be staying at the Esplanade again.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for a balcony room

Stayed for two nights on a Groupon offer. Obviously a popular deal as the hotel was busy and there was a limited choice of dates available, but we got lucky as the weather was good and we managed to see the Olympic Torch arrive in Scarborough. A beautiful location with stunning views from the clifftop. We didn't request a sea view as the hotel was so busy, but we still had a good view over the harbour from our room. The staff were lovely, meals were very good value and the public areas were very tidy, comfortable and well decorated. The room was comfortable and clean, although the decor a little dated. Car parking was limited, but reception were very helpful in finding a space right in front of the door. Would definitely stay again, even without the Groupon offer as the hotel offers very good deals anyway, and the breakfast and dinner were definitely worth it, only the very largest appetites would not be sated!

We booked a Groupon offer but there were only twin rooms available and dates were very limited. We would have ideally liked a weekend break but opted for a Sunday to Tuesday break. I did pay the upgrade of £10 per night for a sea view. We arrived early and found a spot in the car park and called in at reception to say we knew we were too early for our key but the lady did check us in and said to come back just after 2pm and the room should be ready. We had room 361 a twin room with two windows that looked out towards the castle and bay and of course The Grand Hotel. One of the counterpanes was badly marked and had blood stains on it so when we went down for dinner I passed a note to reception and when we returned to our room later these had both been removed and crisp white duvets and covers were in their place. Tea and coffee were the standard issue along with UHT milk but no biscuits. Toiletries in the bathroom were nothing special either. The bedding and towels were bright white and lovely and clean and showed no signs of wear.

Dinner was a 4 course meal but coffee was one of the courses. I would have liked to have picked where we sat for dinner but we were allocated a table quite near the round window looking out over the harbour and bay. The choices were somewhat simple and limited, ideal for bulk service where dinner had to be taken between 6.30 - 7.30pm. The food was served on hot plates and the lady that looked after our table was very friendly. The tables however I feel are too close together so you could not have a private conversation without the tables either side being able to hear. Coffee and tea were served after the meal on the ground floor but spaces were limited and the coffee was too strong for my liking and not particularly hot either and I take mine black so couldn't say it was the milk that had cooled it down.

Breakfast was served between 7.30am - 9.30am and again you were ushered to the same table you'd had the night before. There were cereals, tinned fruit, porridge along with a selection of items that would make a basic full English breakfast but no mushrooms. I asked for bacon and poached egg the first morning and found the bacon to be rather salty and the poached egg was floating around the plate where it hadn't been drained off properly. The mixed toast we were served was soggy too and I like cold, crisp toast. My other half said the fried egg was greasy too.

Our room was serviced each day and I had to chuckle about the tin perched on a stool right beside the lift on our floor for donations for the cleaning staff. A covered shoe box was also left on the side table in the dining room for tips to be left for the staff there.

Breakfast on the second morning was better as I asked for two poached eggs that were not swimming on the plate and my other half opted for scrambled eggs which he said were a lot nicer than the fried one. The waitress came back with an apology from the chef regarding the poached eggs the day before.

The staff around reception and the bar all seem to be related but all were friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. Comments I've read about cars being blocked in are a little unfair as it's the staff that park down the middle and if you ask for a car to be moved they are very obliging.

I would return, but only on another offer I wouldn't pay the full price. I think the exterior facade on the side needs attention it's looking a little scruffy with the flaking paint. The choices on the menu need to be developed as I don't think chef's culinary skills were tested too much.

For what we paid it was a great break, the sun shone and we even got to see the Olympic Torch relay as it passed along the seafront. We did a similar offer a few months ago at The Royal and that was dire, we didn't stay for the second night so well done The Espanade at least we stayed the second night!!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view- it's worth it.

Just back from a long weekend break, we actually got a better deal thru a travel agent than groupon, so worth checking, staff great, meals wonderful, lovely dinning room, one or two niggles, like in the bathroom, on the door where the coat hook was there was a hole in the door, Nothing major would certainly go again but only on a discounted package.

Just back from a brief stay at The Esplanade Hotel Scarborough. Our room 241 was a corner room with two windows, one overlooking the town and bay with views of the castle, the other overlooked another bay with views down the coastline. Both views absolutely spectacular. The hotel enjoys a lovely position standing high above the town but only a few minutes walk to the centre. We stayed as a couple, but it would make an ideal stay for families with young children. Lots to do and see in and around Scarborough and despite the weather, which was not good, it did not spoil our stay. Small car park, it only has a dozen or so spaces, but there is alternative parking round and about. We were on a Groupon offer, which was exceptional value, but will return again later in the year.

Room Tip: We paid a small supplement for a sea view room, it was worth every penny.

Groupon deal - £99 for two nights DBB, twin room. We upgraded to a sea view for £10 per night. Saved about £50 on their prices displayed at their hotel.

Arrival: Car parking is limited about ten bays in their own car park. On street parking is a controlled Resident Zone; a daily exemption is available from the hotel. However, we arrived at 2:30 and finding a slot was virtually impossible - expect a walk from your car. Cars parked in the car park blocked those legitimately bayed - cars would not be able to get out from late afternoon to following day. We managed to get a space on day two, after that day’s checkout time, but left the car there till we were leaving the following day. Suggest you plan ahead if you want to go visiting anywhere by car.

Location. Sits on top of South Cliff above Valley Road (the Grand is on the opposite side of the valley), north corner of the esplanade, overlooking the sea front - walk out of the door and you can see the sea within 15 yards. Access to the town is a short walk over the Valley Road Bridge and easy access to the shorefront, Spa and promenade. There are two funiculars (cliff trams) close by - St Nicholas (leading to the Grand) and South Cliff (at the Spa) - useful for pushchairs and those with mobility issues - they charge about 80p for a single trip.

Reception: Easy and hassle free. Was staffed (I’ve been to places where you've had to shout for someone). There is a small lounge area and other seating areas elsewhere on the same floor. There is a cosy lift, four people comfortably that goes to all floors including the basement restaurant.

Room: Decent enough, plenty of hanging space and drawers for clothes; usual hairdryer and dressing table. Our room was large, double bed and single tucked away, obviously a family room but as a twin you won’t be sleeping next to each other. Had a balcony (which we didn't pay for), sea view was out of side balcony window but good clear view of treed area overlooking valley road. En-suite was clean and adequate; we had a bath with shower above the bath. Freeview television, remote gave options to plug your own devices to the TV (games or DVD) - though I didn't bring any to try. Coffee and tea tray enough for two, replenished daily - however, if you want more the hotel charges you 5p per sachet. I saw into a few other rooms on the same floor - seemed smaller but still generous on size. Room cleaning, on our floor, was done early – thankfully, it was cleaned by mid-afternoon when we returned.

Breakfast: 7.30 - 9:30 on the days we stayed. The expected fruit juice, limited 'tinned' grapefruit / prunes choice, cereal, porridge etc followed by a plated cooked full-breakfast (other choices available). Standard breakfast, same each day. We're fussy and the staff had no problems accommodating our little choice changes.

Dinner: 6:30 - 7:30, though the welcome card we got originally stated ends at 8:00 (was this a Groupon thing?). Choice of two starters one being soup. Main course, three choices two meats and a vegetarian (eg pork, cod and penne pasta) with two potato and two vegetables sides. Adequate and delicious, well cooked. There was also a children's menu. Dessert was a choice of four. Fourth 'course' was coffee but taken at the reception area one floor up - there were not enough chairs in the immediate area to enjoy a quiet drink – I would have preferred coffee at dining table. Service was quick and pleasant with enough friendly staff around.

Late night entertainment: There is a small bar, very friendly barman and not busy – barman also appeared to be the ‘handyman’ and was immediately available when we broke a glass in our room. On day two there was a man singing and playing his ‘organ’ – we gave it a miss.

Departure: Book-out time is 10am; you can leave later but expect to pay. Again, if you want to leave early you might have problems leaving the car park.

Overall: An enjoyable stay, staff helpful and friendly and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Sea view room, seem larger. Remember, closer to the 'entertainment' might be disturbed night...
