Running a b and b in Scarborough in the off season can't be much fun or, at £25 per night, particulary lucrative, but arriving tired after a long journey to face a demand for payment upfront and, since the credit card machine wasn't working, to be asked to go out again to a cashpoint isn't my idea of a warm welcome. Nor is not turning the heating in the room on before arrival on a cold early March day. And having a window of opportunity for a cooked breakfast of only 8.45-9.00 doesn't cut it when you have a 9.00 meeting. For the price maybe I'm being churlish and it must be said that the room was nice and the building smart and clean, but if you are travelling for work I'd go elsewhere.

We would just like to reply to this comment,we appreciate that customers are entitled to their opinion and so are we.Firstly regards to payment upfront, most bed and breakfasts may take payment on departure when they are familiar with the guests or when they have taken a large enough deposit to begin with,in this case it was discussed at the time of booking over the phone that as the date required was not that far away and to save the guest a charge for the usage of the card machine,we would hold the room without a deposit and payment in cash on arrival would be fine.
Unfortunately upon this guests arrival at around 7pm i was busy trying to extend our cable for our card machine,so it was not in use at that time,as we had discussed cash on arrival on the phone i thought this would have been of no consequence. The guest informed me he had no cash on him and asked where the nearest cash machine was,i told him there were two on the end of our street but there was no need for him to go rushing out of the door, and that it was fine for him to go and settle in his room and just dropping it in later would be fine.I certainly never 'demanded' payment! This guest then came down from his room after 10 minutes and by which time the card machine was now back in use,i said it was fine for him to use now if he wanted and he said it was not a problem and produced £25 in cash anyway!
Regarding the heating of our rooms,we have the heating on all day and until late in the evening throughout the whole of winter and any time of the year when its needed,we have it on and if guests are too hot they can turn the heating off in their rooms themselves via the radiators, everyone is differant and whats too hot for some is fine for others.I am afraid with the prices of gas and energy we cannot turn guests radiators on in their rooms before the guests arrive as we dont always know what time a guest will be arriving,[in this case the guest did not arrive until 7pm!so what time are we sopposed to put the radiator on and waste gas?],if we did this then we would have to significantly increase our prices and as we are proud to say we have not increased our price in three years now not even with inflation rises.Guests are of course more than welcome to put their radiators on when they arrive straight away and the rooms heat up very quickly.
Our breakfast time is set between 8.45 until 9.30am so im not sure where this guest got 8.45 till 9am from, maybe a misunderstanding,we find these times are good for the majority of our guests who are holidaymakers and its good for us as we have a large family to look after also,we are always open to requests for breakfasts at differant times, and we have done so on many occasions, this guest explained he had a meeting at 9am and we agreed to serve breakfast at 8.15am which we did do so it beggars belief that this was not mentioned in the review!!
I have noticed that this mans reviews of other places he has stayed/eaten at have not been very complimentary.
Here at the Captain Hotel guest house we try very hard to ensure all our guests enjoy our stay with us,we strive to provide a good, clean service within our capabilities and around the hard financial times the country is facing. We believe we provide extremely good value for money.
We are very sorry for this man that he did not enjoy his stay with us.

We stayed here as a family of five, myself and my partner and we have 3 children aged 12,10 and 7.we initially made some enquiries at various places around Scarborough and found that for a family of our size and for the ages of our children a stay for 3 days would be quite expensive. We were very relieved to find this place as rather than charge us individually they charged us only for the room per night which was a very reasonable price to say the least!! I would describe this place as excellant value for money. The owners are very accomodating, nothing is too much trouble, they even put an extra bed in the room for one of our children, our room was lovely, with an ensuite shower room and everything was spotlessly clean and well equipped. We all had a full and hearty breakfast each morning which was very nice indeed, and the location is perfect because it is close by to everything.Thankyou very much for a lovely stay and look forward to seeing you again next year!

fantastic hotel and service! i stayed for 4 nights with my 2 year old son, my friend and her 3 year old daughter and 11 month old son. they made us feel very welcome, and were very understanding with us having 3 small children! we were shown a room on the second floor but there was a problem with the window, it wouldnt lock (which is not great for kids) but they offered to buy a lock or move us to another room (which was very kind) we chose the other room, which was lovely, spacious and very clean! breakfast was lovely, with a choice of cereals, toast and a full cooked breakfast. the location of the hotel was fantastic, just 2 minutes away from the train station and 10 minutes from the beach. the only problem we had were the noisy seagulls!!

This hotel is lovely, the owners are very friendly and make you feel welcome. The hotel is about a 10 - 15 minute walk to the beach through the town. You can leave your car parked out side the hotel as you will be given a permit for the duration of your stay.
Would highly recommend this hotel

I have been to Scarborough a number of times and stayed in quite a few places,i booked over the phone and was slightly dubious as the prices here were cheaper than i have usually paid for B&B,my mind was put at ease as soon as i arrived as we were greeted very warmly by the owners and the interior is of a very high standard and is remarkably clean. Our room was lovely decorated, with an ensuite shower room which was spotless, the rooms were well equipped with tea and coffee facilities,tv etc.The breakfast room was lovely and the breakfast was delicious! I was very impressed to find they use free range eggs and locally produced bacon and sausages. The location is perfect as nearby to everything,we went to the Stephen Joseph theatre which is two minutes around the corner,as were the shops [much to my husbands dismay!] and beaches 5-10 minutes walk. Had a great stay and would definately come again!
