Owner description: Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our working farm is home to donkeys, mules and hinnies - large and small. Come and say hello to some of the hundreds of donkeys waiting to meet you. There is also the exciting new Understanding Donkeys Zone and Dr Svendsen’s Writing Hut to explore, as well as guided walks, meet the groom sessions twice daily, the Nature Centre, the Maze to lose yourself in and a range of souvenirs to browse in the Gift Shop. When it’s time to take a well-earned break, the Sanctuary’s new family-friendly restaurant, The Kitchen, provides local, ethically sourced food alongside spectacular views over the donkeys paddocks out to the sea. Open 9am - 5pm, daily. The Donkey Sanctuary was founded as a charity in 1969, by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. Open 365 days a year; entry and parking is free. Dogs on a lead are welcome.

No dislikes. We were staying close by so did not eat here. Very easy to wander around. The staff very friendly and answer any questions, and of course, those darling donkeys. We make a point of calling at the Donkey Sanctuary every time we stay in Sidmouth. What wonderful work they do. Long may it continue.

We took our twin 4 year old grandsons here. They were not too sure about stroking the donkeys at first but by the time we had been there for a couple of hours they were stroking them and chatting to them, very sweet. There are donkeys of shapes, sizes and ages, and some real characters too. The collars tell you whether they are male or female, what they their names are and how old they are. You are left to wander as you please. There are some lovely walks and plenty of places to have a picnic outside or undercover. It is ideal for pushchairs and wheelchair users, though if its wet the going might get a bit tough on the grass pathways, but there are plenty of concrete paths too. We ate in the cafe, which was very good value. The boys had a donkey bag each - sandwich of choice, fruit, crisps and a box of juice, a bag of wax crayons and paper with quizzes on was included. Hubby and I had a sandwich made with delicious crusty proper bread!
Very well organised and worth a visit for young and old.
