“A lovely way to celebrate”
Reviewed January 26, 2011

We made a welcome return to the Victoria to celebrate my parents special wedding anniversary - it is after all their favourite hotel. The grand occasion prompted splashing out on the large and beautifully equipped Victoria Suite - certainly not a budget option but well worth it if staying with a group of mixed ages because of the flexibility and privacy it offers, not to mention a great view from the private terrace. As ever the service, food and welcome was faultless and we just need another excuse to come back again.

Our first visit to the Victoria – a winter weekend break. What a wonderful hotel, beautifully presented offering a warm and welcoming ambience.

Our standard room was on the first floor offering a modest sea view, a good size room well presented and very clean - excellent housekeeping.

The hotel affords several well presented spacious lounges that never appear to be busy even when the hotel is fully occupied. The decor and general appearance compliments the hotels Edwardian heritage. We found the staff to be friendly, courteous, polite and respectful.

The welcoming formality and service in the dinning room coupled with excellent food compliments the overall quality of the hotel. The dinning room musical entertainment during dinner added to the first class atmosphere. The dinning room staff were efficient and discrete.

In my opinion this is not a hotel for young people or those with children but is best suited to those of a mature age profile.

Nothing in this world is perfect and there were a few minor aspects of the Victoria that perhaps could be improved, ...... but the Victoria provides an excellent all round 4 star standard that may be difficult to beat – the hotel offers a relaxing stay in a lovely environment. We would not hesitate in recommending and we will most definitely return.

We have alwsy wanted to stay at this Hotel and had recently stayed at the Carlyon Hotel, one of the Brend Group sister hotels. We loved the Carlyon and one of the main reasons for this was the great friendly attitude and quality service from all the staff. Sad to say this attitude had not transferred to the staff at the victoria. I don't know why this is but maybe it is down to a management style which affects staff under them. We did notice that very few of the staff smiled or seemed overly happy. We encountered one of the female managers on more than one occasion who had a persistent aura of what I describe as 'glumness', her face was fixed in a dour un moving expression and any attaempts to engage where returned with a blank look. We had dinner in the evening in the restuarant and the timings were out all night. We had to wait to order our wine, the delay between the starter was overly long and when we got our main meal it was obvious that they had been sitting on the servery and were not hot when they arrived at our table. My wife had to retunr hers and of course I couldn't start mine until heres was returned, so mine was cold then.
The Spa is small with a a pool that really only allows 2 to swim, the jacuzzi could just about take 2 people and the sauna was not working. We sat on some loungers in an area in the spa and were enjoying a doze and quiet read when the manager who doesn't/can't smile' told us we had to move as someone had booked a therapy and they used this area for such sessions..stating..."people don't normally use this area" . Maybe she was having a bad day!
Our sleep at night was disturbed by a loud humming sound from another room that started in the early hours and carried on until morning.
This is a good looking hotel with nice furnishings in a fantastic hotel, but they need to learn from their sister Hotel at the Carlyon as to being friendlier to guests and to smile a bit more.

My husband and I first visited the Victoria about 22 years ago. At the time we thought it was the most luxurious place we had ever visited and the service was superb. I remember sitting in the lounge after dinner amidst sumptious soft furnishings with beautiful table lamps and as long as you sat there your coffee cup would be re-filled without your having to ask!The decor is gorgeous (I love the Edwardian elegance of the place) and the food is delicious too.Anyway, we have been back at least 6 times since our first visit and it never fails to please. In fact we have just booked a 3 night 'winter warmer' break there for this year. The Victoria remains our favourite place to go when we feel the need to 'chill out' and treat ourselves. We have stayed at many hotels, but this is still our favourite.

This was our annual 3 or 4 days R & R after a hectic Christmas/New Year hosting the family and our friends. We look for a hassle free, lazy experience of good food, unobtrusive service and comfortable surroundings. We got it. The food was good, varied and well-presented by attentive staff....who all spoke good english (a high proportion were from the uk!). The public areas were large, well presented and again had well-trained staff available at all times. In short, it provided the genuine "Brend Hotel" experience!

Our room was large with good furniture and fittings and a sea view ...delux state room...... , the bathroom was on the small side, but well decorated, clean and everything worked.

The location (Sidmouth) , the date (schools back...hols over) and the quality of the package combined to make the us, at 57, among the youngest guests.... the lounge did have a hint of "up-market Residential Home", but in the nicest possible way!

We decided to have a few days R and R before the chaos of Christmas - and decided to stay at the Victoria. We have stayed at a Brend hotel before and love the sedate, good mannered, traditional Englishness of these hotels. The staff are helpful, friendly and good mannered - but not in your face. The hotel is so comfortable, the lounge area you could sit in with a good book all day. The food is superb.

I don't have a bad word to say about the place and would recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of spoiling at any time of year!

My partner and I stayed at the Victoria for 2 nights and we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The room was lovely and kept very clean. The hotel itself was absolutely lovely it is set in a beautiful location overlooking the sea of sidmouth, and the decor was superb with a sumptous dining room and elegantly decorated observation lounge.

The staff gave good quality service and were attentive as well as friendly, as expected of a four star they asked if we wanted our luggage to be taken to our room, they also showed an interest in us by striking conversation which was nice.

The food was also superb one of the evening meals for which I chose the pork belly was utterly devine and the best food I have ever tasted, and my partner and I are used to eating in some very expensive restaurants so I would say I am a good judge when it comes to food. The wine was also delicious we went for devons own sharpham estate which was luscious and well worth the money. We also indulged ourself one day and had a Victoria cream tea which was scrumptious and definetly filling.

There is plenty to do in the hotel such as free pitch and putt, free snooker, or a free relax in the spa which had a nice size swimming pool and some lovely heated chairs which were so relaxing. There was also lovelymusic on the saturday by a lovely old band playing some tasteful tunes, which was really pleasant, and we couldnt hear the music from our room so that was really good.

My only complaint would if anything that on the morning of check out my bacon for breakfast tasted over salted a little, but apart from that the whole stay was just perfect bliss. If you can afford it as it is at the higher end of the hotel market it would definetly be worth a stay. My partner and I definetly intend to revisit the Victoria.
