“Old Fashioned Elegance”
Reviewed April 6, 2011

We have just stayed at this hotel for three nights to see something of the area which we usually whizz past on our way down to Cornwall. We had a sea-view room in a turrett....a lovely size.....two easy chairs in the alcove,a small table, chocolates, fruit and water, plus coffee and tea making facilities and biscuits.......lots of smellies, big bath, good shower and huge bed.Heater if you were cold or fan if you were hot also available. We couldn't fault the staff......everyone we came into contact with was friendly and helpful.Breakfast really good...all freshly cooked to order.....can't comment on the evening meals(you have to wear a jacket and tie in the restaurant at dinner) as we had bed and breakfast only.Nothing was too much trouble and the swimming pool was lovely too.We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a quiet weekend away(we did feel a bit like teenagers surrounded by white -haired guests, and we are in our fifties!!)but it is in a brilliant position for exploring the surrounding countryside and the South Devon coastline.Well done Brend Hotels!

Just back from a weekend stay at this lovely old hotel. We took a suite and found it to be very comfortable - with 2 balconies and 2 small sunrooms, lovley views and superbly clean.
Enjoyed a traditional high tea - beautiful pastries - and then somehow still managed an excellent 4-course dinner in the evening. Service in the dining room as elsewhere was impeccable. This really is a beautiful hotel enjoying a wonderful position overlooking the bay and seemed very busy for a weekend in February. Although this was half term week we only saw a couple of children. Most of the guests seem to be older, retired couples. A really lovely staff - and lots of them - made this a memorable short break.

We have stayed at the Victoria Hotel on many occasions and it never fails to please us.
The Hotel is very grand and comfortable, and food is fantastic.
How stay over the New Year period was amazing.
The views from the dining room and coffee loungearef antastic as they over looks the sea, very theraptic.
The staff and Managers especially Gemma go out thier way to make you most welcome and make sure your stay is a pleasant one. They work very long hours but they always have a smile for you, and nothing is to much trouble.
We are looking forward to a return visit in the not to distant future as a warm welcome always awaits us.

We made a welcome return to the Victoria to celebrate my parents special wedding anniversary - it is after all their favourite hotel. The grand occasion prompted splashing out on the large and beautifully equipped Victoria Suite - certainly not a budget option but well worth it if staying with a group of mixed ages because of the flexibility and privacy it offers, not to mention a great view from the private terrace. As ever the service, food and welcome was faultless and we just need another excuse to come back again.

Our first visit to the Victoria – a winter weekend break. What a wonderful hotel, beautifully presented offering a warm and welcoming ambience.

Our standard room was on the first floor offering a modest sea view, a good size room well presented and very clean - excellent housekeeping.

The hotel affords several well presented spacious lounges that never appear to be busy even when the hotel is fully occupied. The decor and general appearance compliments the hotels Edwardian heritage. We found the staff to be friendly, courteous, polite and respectful.

The welcoming formality and service in the dinning room coupled with excellent food compliments the overall quality of the hotel. The dinning room musical entertainment during dinner added to the first class atmosphere. The dinning room staff were efficient and discrete.

In my opinion this is not a hotel for young people or those with children but is best suited to those of a mature age profile.

Nothing in this world is perfect and there were a few minor aspects of the Victoria that perhaps could be improved, ...... but the Victoria provides an excellent all round 4 star standard that may be difficult to beat – the hotel offers a relaxing stay in a lovely environment. We would not hesitate in recommending and we will most definitely return.

We have alwsy wanted to stay at this Hotel and had recently stayed at the Carlyon Hotel, one of the Brend Group sister hotels. We loved the Carlyon and one of the main reasons for this was the great friendly attitude and quality service from all the staff. Sad to say this attitude had not transferred to the staff at the victoria. I don't know why this is but maybe it is down to a management style which affects staff under them. We did notice that very few of the staff smiled or seemed overly happy. We encountered one of the female managers on more than one occasion who had a persistent aura of what I describe as 'glumness', her face was fixed in a dour un moving expression and any attaempts to engage where returned with a blank look. We had dinner in the evening in the restuarant and the timings were out all night. We had to wait to order our wine, the delay between the starter was overly long and when we got our main meal it was obvious that they had been sitting on the servery and were not hot when they arrived at our table. My wife had to retunr hers and of course I couldn't start mine until heres was returned, so mine was cold then.
The Spa is small with a a pool that really only allows 2 to swim, the jacuzzi could just about take 2 people and the sauna was not working. We sat on some loungers in an area in the spa and were enjoying a doze and quiet read when the manager who doesn't/can't smile' told us we had to move as someone had booked a therapy and they used this area for such sessions..stating..."people don't normally use this area" . Maybe she was having a bad day!
Our sleep at night was disturbed by a loud humming sound from another room that started in the early hours and carried on until morning.
This is a good looking hotel with nice furnishings in a fantastic hotel, but they need to learn from their sister Hotel at the Carlyon as to being friendlier to guests and to smile a bit more.
