“What a pit”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2007

Booked there for 2 nights. On arrival we were shown to a dark, dank, damp, smelly hole that they called a bedroom. Wife's asthma immediately erupted. Asked for another room. No can do. Left immediately. And, yes, you guessed it, they charged us for the full stay. If you stay in this pit having read this site, you only have yourselves to blame. The very essence of everything that is wrong with British hotels and, yes, I'm British.

The web site suggested this was a hotel with character. In reality the rooms were pokey (we had a B grade), the furniture was fit only for the junk yard and the bathroom was a disgrace. The car parks were very small and difficult to manoeuvre in.
Service in the restaurant was slow, and in some cases it seemed that the guests were an inconvenience. The menu selection was poor and the food often lukewarm. I have never been tempted to write a review of an hotel before but I feel as this was such poor value for money people ought to be warned.

Sidmouth is a resort that doesn't do modern - there are no amusement arcades and a sense of the past pervades - the Victorian promenade is bordered by buildings of character - perfect for those like myself that seek this.

The Royal Glen is the perfect match, a grade 1 listed building full of character and history where courtesy, friendliness and good service are the key. The hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms are quaint but are comfortable - but don't expect a 42inch LCD television in the bedroom (12 inch portable is more likely).

There is a very good (small) indoor pool which takes a bit of finding.

I will definitely return

Lovely location, and a unique building.

Very much a home from home, have stayed at the Victoria but this is much nicer. And cheaper!
Very friendly helpful staff, they make you feel like family (without the rows!) It seems to be a happy place with staff and guests enjoying each others company.

Rooms are all cosy and very clean but not a corperate modern image, which I think gives them charm.

Food good, and your not rushed, very friendly service.

The Glen is full of history each room is diffrent, not disabled friendly (a grade 2 building so restricted) but they have a ramp into the building and the staff will do all they can to help, without you being made to feel a pain.

Short walk to seafront but tucked away. Real fire in the smoking room.
Mr Crane (owner) a font of knowledge and Jeff and Judy likewise.
Mary always pleased to see you.

Will be back next year.

It's hard to decide how to rate this hotel as it is so different from the kind of hotel i usually stay in.
The staff were great, the food excellent and couldent be beaten for value.
Everyone seems to come back year after year but most were quite elderly.
The pool takes some finding (through the garage area) but worth it.
It has a certain charm and yes i would stay again.

The Royal Glenn has characture and characters, yes steeped in history
it has to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Sidmouth, yes a little tired and tatty in the internal decor department but comfortable and clean with an oldie worldie ambience, a small team of friendly staff run this relatively small family owned hotel. We have been fortunate enough to stay in some of the worlds best hotels and this is not the Victoria (Sidmouth) but then you will not be paying 5* prices either .
THE GOOD
Child Freindly
1-2 Mins Walk to the sea front
Small indoor pool (usually restricted to the larger more expensive hotels in the area)
A certain type of charm, value for money
THE NOT SO GOOD
Parking a little limited
Full english breakfast could benifit from slightly more generous portions for those with a large appetite.

We spent 3 wonderful weeks at The Royal Glen Hotel from April 19-May 9 and this was our 4th time staying at this hotel. The Glen has more charm than any other hotel in Sidmouth. No it does not have a beauty shop or gift shop but it has charm and history. Each time we stay at The Glen we see the same people from previous years that feel the same as we do. We have traveled all over England and now we just return to Sidmouth and The Royal Glen.
