“Excellent place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2012

We stayed for three nights in Room 4. We loved it! The room was comfortable, the service excellent. There was a very good choice of food for both breakfast and evening meal and you could even have a packed lunch if you wanted one.

We had no idea it was destroyed by fire - there were photos in a folder showing what happened and how they rebuilt it - and the result is amazing!

There is a lovely walk along the river to Sidmouth (just over a mile) and plenty of other places to visit. Sidmouth itself offers plenty of shops and a lovely beach.

As stated by another guest, the Inn has recently been rebuilt after a fire. It is also delightfully thatched. No wonder they don't like people over feeding the fire. We first stayed in January and have just returned. It won't be the last time. We were in room 3, very nicely furnished and decorated with a shower and bath ensuite. The breakfast is very good with locally sourced products and the food in the Dining Room is also very good. The Inn always has a lot of locals in the bar and Dining Room which says a lot for the place.

We recently visited this place. We didn't stay, but we were so curious, being in the trade ourselves, we asked if it was ok to look around. Linda was so kind, she even offered us to show some of the rooms. The rooms, particularly the bathrooms are decorated very nicely, traditional look in modern style. Using spot lights in the rooms suggest that they think every little detail for their customers. Rooms are bright and clean, almost everything is new (plenty of antic furniture of course, as they worked very hard to re-gain the character of the building after the fire in 2005).
We would like to go back there to stay next time, with friends to play golf, as Thorn is just up the road. The donkey sanctuary is also very close. This is a great place to stay for families and romantic couples too, as the garden is just fantastic, with beautiful flowers and fantastic views of the whole town!

This ancient Inn was rebuilt following a fire in its recent history. The resulting new buildings offer the convenience of modern accommodation whilst retaining the charm and look of an old thatched roadside inn. There is a large car park. Our room (no.1) was comfortable and tastefully decorated. Our bathroom was splendid. Our evening meal was very good and typical of quality pub food. Breakfast took an age to arrive but when it finally did appear it was superb. Having read earlier reviews I have to say that the proprietor was perfectly charming to us (although we didn't mess with his fire or try to order food in the wrong place). On the downside it is not actually in Sidmouth and the one hour stroll to the beach requires stout walking shoes and support vans with hydration facilities (it was very hot on the day we tried it). The toilet was not quite as clean as it first looked (brush and harpic required under the rim!) And the traffic noise is substantial (although I lived many years on a main road so this was not a problem for me). Overall a very comfortable stay.

Went here for lunch and a drink with friends. We chose this over the other pub nearby because it had more space and was more child-friendly. The food was average, the beer was good. Most of the staff were friendly. However, there was one chap, who I believe was the proprietor, who was extremely rude and spoke to us as if we were naughty/stupid children. After telling us that we were at the wrong bar to pay for food, he then proceeded to patronise us, and when we turned around, we noticed him throw his arms up in the air. Unbelievable. How could he forget that we were paying good money so his business could run? I would not recommend this place to anyone. Customers deserve better, and need to vote with their feet.

Room Tip: Avoid it.

A repeat visit, but never again. Told off by Graham for putting a log on the fire! Lovely AMBIENCE BUT put off by awful brisque attitide and lack of welcomingness. Rooms basic but great showers. Very poor meal but a really terrific breakfast. Welcoming, friendly and very caring breakfast staff. £95 for a twin room poor value. Brush-up on people skills and food quality if you want to suceed. Meanwhile, I shall not be returning which is a pity as in the past I have been happy. Shame.
