We had to meet family midway between Lincolnshire and Essex before they went on to Dorset, and roughly midway was Stanborough park. Two big, decent carparks (no coin machines though) so plenty of parking. It was spotlessly clean with lots of ducks and geese. The water was clear and it looked like a fun place for paddling in the river in the summer.

We were however really surprised to find the toilets shut at the North carpark, so walked over to the public toilets in the South carpark, only to find them and the cafe shut. It was a sunny winter Sunday, is this a normal thing for all facilities to be locked up? It meant a 15 minute walk up to the Tesco extra for a hot drink and the toilet which was disappointing.

On the map it also said kids playground but this was a Go Ape set up which was also all shut up. However it does look like a new splash park is being built which should improve facilities markedly.

I walk my dogs regularly round the lakes, but dread the summer when hordes from North London descend on the place of a weekend with their BBQ’s (which incidentally are not allowed) loud music and total disregard for others! The amount and type of litter left by these people is unbelievable. It is advisable to keep your dogs on a lead if visiting after the weekend as the place is full of chicken and chop bones which are left on the ground. It is such a shame because the park is lovely and thankfully in the winter there are only dog walkers and joggers.

This used to be a very pleasant area to enjoy particularly in the good weather. Now the children play facilities have been upgraded and it has become very popular and as a result very busy. The worst is that it now attracts families who "set up camp" in some of the wooded areas, complete with fires/ovens, loud music and masses of litter. It feels quite intimidating to walk through those zones.
The best tip for visiting here is to park in one of the roads close to the park and walk in through one of the access points.
