We go there at least once a year and the kids love the area. Balmoral castle, Braemar , Aboyne even Ballater. Deeside activity park is fairly good value with excellent food to pass the time while the kids risk life & limb. Lochnagar distillery - the first of many. Glenfiddich is great setup. Oh and the breakfasts at the hotel are great.

We stayed in this hotel Sunday and Monday nights 8th and 9th July. We treated ourselves to an upgrade to a suite and it was worth it. Lovely spa bath. There are many places of interest in the surrounding area. We opted for Braemar and Edzell Castles plus Royal Lochnagar Distillery. Enjoyed all the visits. Going into Ballater to see the museum at the old railway station is worth a wee trip.
The swimming pool in the hotel is very nice too and not as busy as I thought it would be. At one point we had the pool to ourselves. Big enough for enjoying a swim and there is a lovely children's pool too.
We ate in the Clubhouse Bar and the food there was very good. Well worth a trip north to stay here.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the space of having a suite.

We stayed for 2 nights in a suite, which was very nice, with lots of space. The only downside was the black mould on the inside of the window frame and on the curtain lining in both the bedroom and lounge, it was really disgusting in the bedroom. We did not notice this until the day of departure, and mentioned to reception staff at check out.
The staff where excellent, courtious and very helpful. The food, especially in The Oaks, was excellent, as was the usual Hilton buffet breakfast.

We had our 2011 Staff Xmas party at this Hotel and it was fabulous - we also received 2 upgrades to Chalet/Suites for 2 couples as they were celebrating 2 x 40th B.Day parties.
We drove in a convoy, arrived at lunchtime and had a lovely buffet meal in a Private Dining room, then pampering sessions at the Spa, followed by a swim - then we dressed up for Dinner, joined the other Dinig companies and had a ball dancing til 01.00am to both Dicso and the ceilidh band
No early rising to enjoy a beautiful breakfast - a thouroughly great 24 hours

- so much so that we've arranged to repeat it again 2012!

Room Tip: Never be too shy to ask for an upgrade - you don't get unless you check!

I am so pleased you enjoyed your Christmas celebrations with us and that you are coming back again to celebrate with us this year. T

he festive season is always a special time at Craigendarroch, what with our party nights, reindeer, the tallest lit Christmas tree in the UK and all other aspects that make Christmas special and a wonderful place to celebrate for staff and guests alike.

I look forward to meeting you once again this year and look forward to another fantastic festive season.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. First of all I need to praise the reception staff, our welcome was very pleasant and efficient. We were booked into a standard guest room but were upgraded to a guest room plus. As far as I understand this was a slightly bigger room and had a table and chairs. The room itself (53) was very bright and airy and had large picture windows which overlooked woodland and (If it's not raining) the mountains beyond. Furnishings and decor were fresh and in good order. Flat screen t.v. and all the usual expectations.
My one gripe would be the bathroom, it was very small and showed signs of age. The shower was very old and trickled out water. Nothing to do with the water pressure as the tap pressure was very strong and had plenty of hot water. The general feel in the bathroom was that a complete refurb was needed. I'm not going to be too picky though on the whole it didn't spoil our stay.
We had dinner on the first night in the Clubhouse restaurant and despite what some other reviewers have said could not smell the swimming pool. The service was excellent and the staff seemed to cope very well with a busy night.
As far as the food was concerned we both had first class meals with all three courses, not in the least bland or dull. The quality and quantity was spot on and I would highly recommend it.
On our second night we decided to have a meal in our room as we didn't feel like going out after a long day. We ordered a main course each, this took about 45 mins from ordering which I thought was reasonable as it is all cooked to order. The room service waiter was very efficient and pleasant, the food once again was piping hot with ample portions and very good quality.
Breakfast was a highlight as there is a huge choice of cereals, yoghurt, bread, ham, cheeses, fish, traditional cooked items (buffet style) and eggs to order. marvellous way to set you up for the day. The coffee was very good too.
We didn't use the leisure facilities as it was very busy, due to the inclement weather and the start of the school holidays, but the pool area looked really nice.
All in all a very comfortable stay.

Room Tip: Room 53 is situated at the back of the hotel but has a lovely outlook to the trees and mountains bey...

Many thanks for your wonderful comments regarding your stay at Craigendarroch. I am so pleased we looked after you well and you enjoyed the food and service you received whilst here. We work hard to deliver the best experience for the guest and although we dont always get it right, it is a pleasure to hear when we do.

I do agree with you that our bathrooms can let the whole room down and we are working on a refurbishemnt programme to rectify this ast the moment.

Ballater is a lovely place and we were looking forward to our stay at the Craigendarroch - the smallest Hilton in the world. The drive up was breathtakingly atmospheric and the hotel itself is charming.

The high points were the breakfasts - lots of choice and a great range of healthy options from smoked salmon to organic yogurt. A variety of breads, cereals, local meat and a good sized pot of tea all made the breakfast one of the best we've ever had. The pool and spa are great too. we had a lovely Sunday morning swim with the pool all to ourselves. It's a good size and a lovely green and secluded setting. The staff on breakfast and in the spa were friendly and welcoming.

I'm being deliberately positive about the good things, but my abiding memory of the Craigendarroch sadly will be our experience of arriving at reception. We were clearly a nuisance. There was barely any eye contact, we weren't given important information and us asking if we could possibly dine with the rest of our family staying there was obviously unreasonable. I was fuming when we walked up to our room, it was not a good experience.

I hit boilng point when I had to walk past a group of men smoking on the fire escape near our room which meant our room smelt of smoke - Yuk. We did not feel comfortable going back to reception, I'd run out of energy by then. Our American family members were very unimpressed.

However, after an awful staff, the staff who were on the next day were lovely and helpful and warm and we were reassured. The staff are obviously very busy, but most of them managed not to make us feel too guilty about making them even busier.

I'm sure hotel bosses know the importance of every interaction the paying guest, but what sets the whole scene and tone is how the staff treat you and particularly when you walk in the door, tired and weary and looking forward to a nice relaxing time. That was brought home to us big style during our stay. A smile and a welcoming 'hello' don't cost much, but the lack of them does.

Room Tip: the hotel is a warren! we had an okay room at the back but would ask for a top floor room to avoid n...

We are just back home after spending two days in the Craigendarroch Hotel. We found it to be a lovely peaceful hotel which was perfect for us. We were delighted with the food and could not fault it. Breakfast was more than ample and there was plenty to choose from. However, a special mention must go to ALL the staff who were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they were always smiling. We will definitely return to this hotel in the future.
