It may be called a hotel, but I've never been 'phoned by a hotel three times in a row to be asked the exact time of arrival. A half hour window was not acceptable as the duty manager "lived 5 minutes away and didn't want to hang around waiting for our arrival". We had planned to eat in the hotel restaurant as a birthday treat, but "we are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday". Ah well, a celebratory drink in the bar then? No, that was closed too. We were let into what appeared to be a closed hotel, lights off, everyone gone home. A weird experience.

The room was clean and comfortable; a nice touch was the bowl of fruit, bottled Deeside water and homemade shortbread. The breakfast was excellent with a choice of full Scottish, smoked haddock (with one egg, not the advertised two!) or omelette. However, the tariff is far too expensive - we could have had a welcoming on-site host at a local B&B for half the price. The Auld Kirk is more a concept than reality: once inside the room you would have no idea of the building's provenance.

We were determined to eat in the restaurant on our last evening (the only night it was open during our stay). The sample menu looked interesting, including the vegetarian option. However the day's veggie option "chickpeas in tomato sauce and rice" is the sort of mid-week quickly thrown-together meal I make. The chef retorted "that's all there is" and walked away! The "take it or leave it attitude" ensured we enjoyed a superb meal a few doors down at The Deeside Hotel!

On the morning of our departure, there were no staff available to return the key to. We had pre-paid so it didn't matter. I have never stayed in a place where the duty manager was also the waitress and cleaner. Perhaps there isn't an owner as such?! It would answer a lot of questions.

Just returned from another stay at this fantastic hotel. Spent the night for my wifes birthday, and dined there as well. Lisa and the rest of the staff were fantastic. Made feel very at ease right from check in and all the way through. Evening meal was beautiful, even although we were told when booking it was a limited menu due to the time of year, which I found very honest. Give this a try ,you won't be disappointed.

Stayed here with friends and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Staff were friendly and very welcoming so we felt at ease from the very start. Food was great as were the rooms. A real feelgood factor about the place.

This had good reviews when I looked on trip advisor so perhaps expected too much of it but having stayed at a wonderful and much better and more personal B&B on the way for less money.I found the bedroom very ordinary (but clean) and the rather impersonal feel a disappointment. The breakfasts were great and the waiting staff lovely but the owners seemed to be absent and on the Sunday the place was locked and empty aoart from us.
Facilities were good however and nothing specific to complain about but can't say we found the stay memorable after spending £480 for 4 nights.

We chose The Auld Kirk as we like to chose "quirky" places to stay and for its location as we were going to the Ballater Highland Games. Our room was very clean and comfortable but similar to many hotels, you wouldn't really know you were staying in a converted church. Breakfast was very good.
We had dinner in the restaurant on one night which you pay separately for but was excellent. The restaurant still has many of the church features and very nicely decorated.
Thanks to Lisa for the lovely welcome.

Took my husband here for his birthday - dinner bed and breakfast. Thoroughly loved the whole experience from the warm welcome, the top notch (locally sourced) food, beautiful ambience, excellent service to the extremely comfortable room. We needed to leave before 8am and were very grateful to Lisa who brought a cooked breakfast to our room before breakfast was officially started. We'll definitely be back.
