Prior to last weekend, we always ended up at the same cafe whenever we were passing through Ballater. However, on this occasion (and thanks to TripAdvisor), we decided to give The Bothy a try. We were very glad we did.

Lovely sandwiches and toasties accompanied by a tasty little salad ( not just your bog standard lettuce & tomatoe, this one had strawberries, black grapes and yellow peppers too) and a few crisps on the side. Although we'd fancied a plate of soup, the two on offer didn't appeal ( I always think it's a good idea to have one choice that's a "normal" soup i.e. not too unusual and sometimes wish restaurants would get back to basics when it comes to soups)

Never mind, the piece de resistance was the cakes. Someone clearly knows how to make a sponge! Coffees also very good. Would definitely return here. Oh, and by the way, the staff remain welcoming and friendly despite being very busy. Happy to recommend.

We called into the Bothy twice during our recent stay in the area and can't wait to go back! On both occasions there was a fantastic choice of food and cakes (a different selection of cakes each time.Definitely a good sign!) and the service and ambience was really friendly, no matter how busy they were. We did try a few of the other coffee shops in the area and this was head and shoulders above the rest!

I am a regular at the Bothy. The Full Scottish Breakfast is a great way to start the day before a long walk in the hills. The staff are always friendly and polite. The home bakes are the best in Ballater. This cafe is ALWAYS open 9-00am to 5-30 pm . So if you need a big fry up , you know where to go. I`ll be back for my breakfast again soon !!

Always a pleasure to pop in for something tasty, a friendly chat and a cosy seat by the woodstove- especially on a wintry day. No problem with boots and hill gear either -obviously appreciate and understand N.E. weather and terrain! A good place to go with friends, family or even just by yourself for a break- and there is the Mountain Shop part of the premises to have a browse. Highly recommend it. - I go there regularly.

Thanks very much to the owner and staff at the Bothy in Ballater. Some places when confronted with 11 wet, and I mean leaving pools of water where we sat wet, canoeists who had just got off the river in a snow storm would have politely declined our custom, however these guys were brilliant, the hot soup was the best, followed by coffee and cake which were just superb. Local knowledge of campsites and bunkhouses was provided and we left warmed and a lot dryer than we were when we came in. Sorry about the pools of water!
To those who aren't canoeists, I would say very friendly staff, good food and reasonable prices.
To those who are.....if you are paddling the Dee, make sure that you make this a stop on your trip!
