This restaurant is well worth a visit. Frank and Raff were wonderful hosts and made our 25th Anniversary special, even taking photo's of us and presenting it to us when we left.
They put 25th anniversary on our plates of desserts which was a lovely surprise.

The flavours of the food are excellent. We tried the duck starter which was succulent.
The steak with a stilton top. Beautiful and excellent desserts.
The whole experience was wonderful. Although people may think this restaurant is expensive, for the experience I am surprised it doesn't have a michelin star because it is certainly a hidden secret. Will definately go again

After 25 years of visiting this restaurant it still maintains its consistency for perfection. The atmosphere has to be the nicest & the warmest in the country, this is more like going into a private club. Food, service & presentation 100% . One of the best!

Food Ace must either be a jealous restaurant owner or had a bad journey on the way to this restaurant that soured his experience! My husband and I are frequent diners at St. Helena and we wholeheartedly recommend it to others. We have never been let down by our endorsements of the restaurant's fine service, food and ambience. There are some young servers that have obviously been well trained and who have a maturity and approach that is way beyond what we have experienced elsewhere.
Whilst I am not a Haggis fan, having tried a little of my husband's starter, I can vouch for its superiority over the more bland 'Paxo' taste of similarly tasted dishes in other places.
Yes, the design on the plate is a little whimsical, but my husband reported a chilli flavour rather than Heinz tomato. Judging by the number of times that we saw this starter dish being served, it would appear to be quite popular.
One wonders why Food Ace did not report that his Cote de Boeuf was not cooked to his liking at the time. Why grouse later when the dish would have been removed and a replacement offered?
As for table space, as noted by another contributor, you have to take into consideration the age of the building and although there is a more modern addition (which does not detract from the original), there are various nooks and crannies, which I think add to the ambience. My husband, and others of a similarly weighty build, have no trouble in sitting and/or moving about.
The selection of food caters for every taste and diet imaginable and on each occasion there are several other dishes on offer, presumably selected from the 'market' on the day. For those fish fans, (and I am one)I can thoroughly recommend(when available) the whole bream cooked in paper/foil and the mixed seafood platter, offered as a starter. There are, of course, many other fish and meat dishes that are equally as well tried and very much appreciated. The wine list is exhaustive, with something to suit most palates and pockets.
The type of dress is optional, but from observation, usually fairly dressy. However,as is stated on the restaurant's stationery, casual wear, especially in hot weather,is acceptable as long as you 'make an effort'.
Whether you are celebrating or just having a foodie night out, St. Helena is an outstanding example of what a restaurant should be about, and one that offers a consistently exceptional experience. Be sure to book well in advance and enjoy!

We stopped using St Helena's before Raff and Tony took ownership ,forgot about it and returned a few months ago. We loved it so much we are about to make a 4th visit. Food ,service ,ambiance and wine list are 1st class and each visit was with a number of friends who likewise rate this place highly. Most of us are well drivelled and "foodies".

"Foodace" confuses me as on 2 occaisions some Scottishas friends raved about the Haggis! Given the wordy review and the experiences of many friends and us I am left wondering if this is a competitor comment as the Restaurant is always full and advance bookings are needed.

We met with friends who had not been to the restaurant for many years, we were as usual well received by Ralph and Frank and the aperitif drunk in front of the roaring fire set the tone for the evening.
The food was excellent, the variety of the menu pleased everyone. The wine list offers and extensive choice of wines of around the world. We chose a Fleurie, that was presented at a reasonable price.
At the end of a very convivial evening, the proprietor offered us Petit Fours and complimentary drinks whilst regaling us with entertaining stories.
In all, a memorable evening!

Highly recommendable.
