“Top romantic break destination near Carlisle !!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013 via mobile

Stayed here for one night during a friends wedding. The hotel rooms were well appointed with large beds and a whirlpool bath in our room (12). The furnishings were luxurious with Bulgari cosmetics in the bathroom. Room service wasn't available due to the wedding, but the breakfast the next day was tasty and reasonable value at £10. I would stay again, though the location of the hotel being somewhat out of town makes it better for a romantic break than a night on the town. The staff were friendly and keen to help, service was excellent throughout our stay.

We attended a family wedding reception and stayed for two nights - one night at either side of the wedding. What a perfect place for a fairytale wedding! Everything about the wedding reception was perfect and it really did have that 'magical' feeling to it, especially with all the wonderful Christmas decorations. As it is a small hotel, the only people in it were in the wedding party. We have never attended such a beautiful wedding venue before, and we shall remember this always.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 9, which has a 6ft bed and windows on two walls. Even though we went to bed before...

a stunning place to stay, evening meal was expensive, the owner or manager was very unfriendly towards us, we were a honeymoon couple and felt like we were not welcome there, we couldnt understand why, the place was freezing cold, but our room was the only place that was warm, as we turned the heating on ourselves. we had an evening meal there but it was a disaster the fillet steak was raw even though we asked for medium, the dinning room was freezing cold, we were the only guests in the dinning room, it might be ok for weddings but not very good for holiday couples and families. and the place is not haunted.

Room Tip: make sure the heating works and does not rattle all night

This is a charming old manor house. My room was extremely spacious, the view is very nice, there is a golf course there, but the highlight of my stay was dinner in the restaurant. The food was outstanding. Whenever I am in the UK I look for Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert, as it is my favorite dessert and perhaps the best dish to come out of the UK. Here it was so good that I actually ordered a 2nd!
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars for sleep quality was that I noticed you can hear the road traffic, which is heavy, in the morning.

We were certainly lucky with the weather! The venue was lovely for a wedding setting, the outside space was great and the great hall was spectacular.

The food served during the wedding was beautiful and could not be faulted. I cannot comment on the rooms as we stayed elsewhere but the venue was lovely.

We obviously had no idea of the bloody history of Dalston Hall nor the fact that it has starred on British TV's most haunted, nor that we had been staying in one of the most haunted rooms (Number 4) where a lady is said to walk across the floor, the TV switch on for no reason or it was on the site of a nursery, where children may have died in a fire several hundreds of years ago. My GOD!

Just outside Carlisle, now Cumbria - used to be in Scotland during the bloody 16th Century - Dalston Hall is an amazing place. Reeks of history, the love the owners pour into the place and fantastic staff.

As I said, we had room four - just off the equally "haunted" minstrel's gallery where a tudor clad lady is said to walk - and we loved it. Serene view, great bed and fabulous bathroom.

After meandering through the small village about 5 mins by car from the "hall", we took drinks in village square watching the world go by before returning to change for dinner.

In the bar and pleasant library, drinks were taken before dinner - all delicious - amazing steaks, super smoked salmon and my goat's cheese starter - amazing. I found out after dinner, the bes steaks we've had in years, were cooked by a vegetarian!!

A pleasant nightcap and chat with Karen, one of the owners, before rising to bed, where in the haunted Room 4 we slept liked babies and late - given the amazing blackout blinds.

Breakfast was delicious - smoke haddock and poached eggs and delicious coffee to set you up for a day touring.

This place is a gem - haunted or not, we'll be back. Thanks Karen and guys!

Room Tip: We personally loved Room 4 - just don't watch Most Haunted if you're nervous!

Recently attended my stepson's wedding and seeing it had featured in TV's Most Haunted it was with much trepidation that I spent the Friday night alone (husband arriving next day with the groom). I had room 3 which was on a corner, so offered dual aspects into the gardens. The room, although not large, but narrow, was pleasant, warm and comfortable. The bathroom (shower only) was fully tiled and modern with fairly premium toiletries. The motion sensor light was very disconcerting, especially when it came on when I was nowhere near the bathroom!
However, to the wedding day! The hall was set up for the wedding, but an improvement in the weather meant an outdoor ceremony in a stone gazebo which was very nice. The wedding breakfast and the evening antics was a little strange as the layout of the hotel, which was one main function hall with smaller rooms off it, meant that guests were spread far and wide. Prices at the bar seemed to be an average of £4 for most drinks. A running tab system for those staying was a good idea as we didn;t have to bother with taking out loads of money. Only drawback was final hotel bill was not itemised so unless you kept a count of your drinks you could end up paying for anybodys. The food at night took ages to appear and people were starting to complain. With regard to having your own drink in your room I had heard of and saw notices to the effect of that it would be taken off you with capital punishment to follow !! No, but seriously the notices did not look professional and they weren't very friendly. Also the hotel staff would not allow coaches to come up the drive to drop guests at the door. I know it was a tight squeeze but I personally objected to my pregnant daughter having to walk up. Fortunately the weather was fair, but it was still cold and dark. I also heard that one of the wedding party who was staying over had a dispute with a member of staff who had been less than professional in her manner. The breakfast was very nice, with a good selection and served by the man - I wished I had asked his name - who seemed to do everything. He can't have had much sleep. He was very very good. Having said all this I enjoyed the overall experience and definitely worth a try.

Room Tip: all the rooms seem to be very different; would recommend a look at a selection. If you like the id...
