We don't know Carlisle very well, but stopped off there for just the one night, en route to the Western Isles. We drove into the town centre and checked out a few of the recommended restaurants. Nothing much was open at 5:15, but we wandered past La Pergola, taking a look at what was on offer. It looked hopeful and we saw that they had an early evening happy hour menu. We had anyway decided to return, but a young man passing by asked if we were considering going there and said that he ate there regularly and recommended it. We returned after a short walk around the town and were the first people in. The welcome was good, the decor somewhat heavy, in a (very acceptable and comfortable) old-fashioned way. The service was prompt and efficient, and the food really very nice indeed. By the time we left the place was rapidly filling up and it was clear that locals are well aware of the restaurant's standing. We will stay in Carlisle again on our next trip to Scotland, and will make a point of eating at La Pergola.
