What a lovely, friendly, supportive report. Thank you!
I realise we can't please everyone, but it's a good feeling when someone out there takes the trouble to tell us we're doing some things right.
Thank you for this,
Kind regards, Val

we called in for morning coffee and scones, but were disappointed to find a trestle table in a large empty room showing three sponge cakes with some rather flat scones. No table clothes on the tables, and it gave off the opinion to us that they haven't quite got it right.Although the staff were very friendly maybe a trip to Lanercost priory to see how it is done would not go amiss.

Well, some reviews just don't resonate with me - so I won't say a thing.
(of course, our good friends and country mile neighbours at Lanercost have bare wood tables too). The good news is we're spoiled for choice here in Cumbria - so many really good Tea Rooms, with delicious homemade cakes and scones, freshly made sandwiches, and local food supplies - plan to try them all!

We went to the tea room in the first weeks it was open three times in three weeks on our day out we got served feather light scones beautiful fairy buns and light carrot cake aparantly the owners secret recipie we unfortunately went again and got a slab or brick sized piece of heavy cake and the scones oh dear not nice the rather snooty chef said the other girl was just a night cook and she is running the tea room now the house is amazing and the view from a postcard however as with most places starts well then the quality drops the coffee is however very good so will be returning for that and the views a beautiful house and walk that is nice and flat for us in our golden years

This is a perfectly true report - we had a brief episode of bad cakes. Thankfully, v. brief! But i do remember that cake. (No, I didn't make it....)
Like all newly opened businesses, getting the right systems, staff, menus, suppliers etc etc up and running and working well is an major struggle. When it works, we're on top of the world - but who's perfect? The wrong hire - the wrong supplier - it happens in the best run railroad.
The key thing is did we fix it?
Yes we did!
If I say so myself - the cakes are back to being as good as they should be (she said modestly....). Do please come again and let us show you!
Kind regards, Val

Warwick Hall, located just east of Carlisle in glorious countryside, was the first stop on our 16-day trip through northern England in March. How fortunate we were to find this hidden gem! We stayed three nights in the Red Room, which is larger than it appears in the photographs on the hotel's web site. It has a massive bathroom and very comfortable beds. We slept like babies! Breakfast was usually around 8:30, served in a lovely room looking out on the river. Val: if you read this, I've taken your hints and I am now able to replicate your perfect scrambled eggs - thanks! We felt more like guests in a friend's home than travelers in a hotel. This place is the perfect location for exploring Hadrian's Wall and Vindolana - even on cold, rainy days, these places are amazing! This trip was a once-in-a-lifetime journey for me, since my ancestors come from the Borders region, so I will always have fond memories of this lovely place, Warwick Hall, and the gentle woman who runs it.

Room Tip: Red room is upstairs with no elevator but there are other rooms downstairs too. It's so peacefu...

Awww - thank you! I remember you too - I'm so pleased your scrambled eggs are a happy memory of your trip to England. I rarely tell anyone my secrets - but I'm happy to have shared the recipe for our eggs with you.
Just don't tell anyone else!!

I was delighted to see Val's sign outside Warwick Hall saying it had a tea room. I was looking for somewhere local for my family and I to celebrate my birthday and I'd always wanted to see inside this impressive old building. I booked in mid week for afternoon tea. After a warm welcome at the front door we were shown into a pretty corner room with big windows overlooking the river, three huge settees, a lovely log fire and a large table covered with a crisp white table cloth set out with fine china and cutlery. Sitting off to one side on a small table was a large mouth watering chocolate cake. Our tea and coffee order was taken and a few minutes later a large pot of both arrived. Hot fruit teacakes followed next with real butter, jam and cream. Next two three tier cake stands with finger slices of malt bread covered in cream cheese and smoked salmon, granary bread finger sandwiches with cheese and pickle and a third ham and salad sandwich on white bread. Also small scones with jam and cream, feather light lemon meringues with lemon cream filling, chocolate rice krispie triangles and circles of shortbread. Even though what we had eaten was more than enough we could not ignore the chocolate cake and managed a small slice each and am so glad we did, it was delicious! The lady that served us brought us some tin foil so we could take the rest home which was a nice touch. We were offered as much tea and coffee as we could drink and Val came through to check we had enjoyed the food and service. Who ever does the baking is a real treasure. My family and I all agreed the food, setting and service was excellent and would not hesitate to go again. A big thank you to Val and her staff for a truly lovely afternoon.

We stayed in 'Sarah's room' and found it to be comfortable and spacious. The complimentary cake and tea/coffee in the afternoon on arrival was delicious and very welcome. Breakfast the following morning was likewise delicious. The house is wonderful, the situation is amazing with beautiful views and so peaceful. Val is an excellent host and has a natural ability to make guests feel at home.

Now you're the sort of guest we like! If only all the world was as generous and kind with their praise. It makes it feel v. worthwhile to go to lots of trouble to get things right when someone like you is so appreciative. Please come right back! And let me know who you are when you do.
Many thanks indeed,

Waking up every morning with a view of a salmon river on your doorstep is enough to drive an obsessive fly fisherman mad if you are there in the off season. Good reason to go back when the season starts - and enjoy the lovely breakfast and warm welcome from Val all over again.
