four of us stayed here on the penultimate day of our Hadrian's Wall walk.

a perfect B & B experience - they even made porridge/porage for Michael before we walked on to Bowness

My friend and I booked for one night and were given a room each because the twin was booked. We were nicely surprised by the comfortable spotless rooms and Sheila was very friendly. She gave us a permit to park for two days which enabled us to walk into town next day to explore. There are a few pubs nearby but we went into town for a meal at Pizza Express which was very good. The beds were really comfortable and we had great shower rooms with plenty of towels and toiletries. Breakfast was good we had a cheese omelette each ordered the night before.I would recommend No 1 to everyone.

Room Tip: The single has a very small tv on top of the wardrobe but the room is very nice. The double is roomy...

I booked into "No 1 Guest House" for 3 nights. It lives up to its name as “No 1”. It is a 20 minute walk into town, or there is a bus stop across the road. There are a number of take-away shops and restaurants within metres. On arrival, I was met at the door by my host, Sheila , who showed me to my room at the top of the stairs. It was a lovely room; tastefully finished with beautiful wall paper and curtains and matching duvet and pillows and everything was very clean. On the windowsill in the bedroom and on the dressing table there are pretty pieces of china. Quite lovely. Tea/coffee making facilities are also provided. The window overlooked the garden below. The ensuite bathroom was a good size and very clean, with toiletries and even deodorant. Full English breakfast was included in the price, served in a gorgeous conservatory / dining room, and was delicious, consisting of muesli, fruit compote, fruit juice, followed by a plate of beautifully cooked: 2 sausages, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 fried eggs, cooked tomato, serve of mushrooms plus 2 slices of toast, and a pot of tea. I can highly recommend York House. It had been an absolute delight. Everything was perfect: well located, wonderful hosts, excellent room (with free WIFI) and magnificent breakfasts.

Stated one night. Due car rental issues we ended up arriving three hours late. We arrived at midnight. They stayed up for us. Being empathetic to our car problems. They made sure that we were settled in. Breakfast was pleasant, waiting on us all the time. Can recommend.

My Mum, the wife and I were invited to a family wedding party and needed somewhere to stay for one night in Carlisle. We picked the No 1 Guest House as it was in the same postcode as the party and because they did not charge a single supplement.
There was a friendly welcome from Sheila on our arrival. She was able to give us a token to park in the street so that was not a problem.
Our room was a double room at the rear of the house. It was clean and brightly decorated. The bathroom was crammed with lots of full-size shampoos, shower gels, deodorants and soaps. After a long journey, we were glad to put our feet up with the complimentary hot drinks in the room and what a pleasant surprise - a chocolate Wagonwheel on the tray for each of us!
The bed was really comfortable and we all slept well and woke up refreshed.
Breakfast was delicious! Fresh strawberries and a full English. Mum couldn't manage a big breakfast but Sheila was very accommodating and was able to serve Mum up just what she wanted, cooked just the way she wanted it. It was good to chat over breakfast with Sheila and her husband until we were ready to go.
If you are travelling up or down the Country the No 1 would make an ideal stopover, it would be perfect if you need to be in Carlisle for a few days or as a base for exploring Cumbria. The No 1 Guest House will be our No 1 if visiting family again as it is good value, comfortable with a great home-cooked breakfast.

We arrived an hour late following hold-ups on the M6. Sheila had already called us earlier in the evening to make sure we were ok as she knew we had a long journey, she assured us our late arrival was not a problem. The room was spotless, comfortable and beautifully decorated.

Breakfast was delicious and Sheila and her husband were friendly and helpful. We would have liked to book again for our return journey but they were fully booked! I would recommend the No. 1 Guest House and we will make sure we stay again as Carlisle is a lovely place to visit.

I got to the No. 1 late having had a long days cycle across the Lake District, as part of a Land's End to John o'Groats trip. I was greeted by Sheila who warned me the local pub (opposite) shut at 11. My room and en-suite bathroom were very clean and in good order. The breakfast was excellent and included a wonderful, light and fluffy cheese omelette. The breakfast table was shared with other guests and Sheila and her hubby made for some amusing banter during the meal! Highly recommended B&B.
