“Overpriced rubbish!”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

The sooner this place gets taken over the better, its such a waste of a lovely old building in the heart of a very nice village. Overpriced, very low quality food. The staff are nice enough but it really does not make up for the terrible quality of food here. I really do question where else the reviewers that think this place is fantastic have eaten...compared to The Wimpey or KFC...then maybe this place is OK!!

“Good Enough Food But Nothing Special For The Price. Just Prepare For A Wait.”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

My husband and I visited here yesterday as a rare treat without the kids. We were quickly seated and ordered drinks whilst we decided what to order. The wine was wonderful and the service very good.

We ordered starters, hubby had Tandori chicken with sweet potato and mango. I had Scallops with chorizo, frittata and rocket salad. We waited over half an hour for starters which came lukewarm. The scallops were small but tasty even if they were cold but the "frittata" I expected to be like slivers of omlette were just fried squares of potato. Hubby's starter also tasted good but was also quite cold.

For mains we both had 8oz sirloin steaks. No fault with my meal. Nice steak, could have been seasoned a bit as not the most flavoursome I've ever had but at £12.99 it was priced ok. Hubby had mash with his and said it was underseasoned but nice once he added his own salt and pepper. The tomatoes on the vine were hot on the outside but cold and raw in the middle. The table next to us didn't have tomatoes at all and commented that again, they were hot but not exactly cooked.

We had now been in the restaurant for 90 minutes and had 2 courses. Desserts weren't such a long wait but I was disappointed that the Fruit Medley was unavailable but the syrup sponge was wonderful - I just didn't have enough room to finish it.

The bill when it came was for almost £70 for a 3 course meal and 2 drinks each. If it was a little local pub with a £40-£50 total I'd be happy but it was much more and was not the most memorable of meals unfortunately.

Staff were lovely, well trained and very polite but we won't be rushing back,

“Are we there yet”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

We arrived at the restaurant having booked a table, we were waiting to be seated and seemed to be ignored by staff, several walked past took a good time before we were actually awknowledged and seated. We ordered drinks, then the waiter came up to us about 10 minutes later and asked us what we would like to order for food, we said we would wait until we got our drinks, which then took a further 10 minutes to arrive, starters were not as described, stilton mushrooms came our on a slice of bread and not a muffin, and had hardly any stilton on it, was more like diane sauce on toast. Two of us had the red wine and beef pie, which was nice apart from the carrots being rock solid from undercooking, and the chicken milano which stated that it was served with garlic new potatoes came with only 2 new potatoes cut in half, but instead was bulked out with big chunks of onion. When it came to ordering desert we ordered the brulee and the chocolate torte, waiter came back ten minutes later and told us there was no brulee left, so we ordered coffees instead, waiter then came back ten minutes later and told us we couldnt have coffee as the coffee machine had gone onto a automatic cleaning cycle. was very dissapointing.

“I have visited the Yew Tree numerous times”

and always found the food reasonably priced with good value deals. The service has been a little odd on occasion due to a now non existent habit of taking orders without a notepad which led to errors.

Staff turnover doesn't help but this isn't the managers fault (although the managers do seem to change quite a lot!)

“Great service, great food, lovely staff”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

Went to the Yew Tree for family celebration. Our party covered each decade from 9 - 59. After our drinks were served the youngest were given activity sheets to keep them amused, while adults chatted over drinks before ordering food. We had first and second courses and it was no trouble when we asked for slight variations to the dishes on offer - vegetarians and dieters were catered for. The staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
We had a lovely evening and would definately return either for another family meal or meal for two.
