We used to go to Ask a lot and decided to try it again after a break. The food's ok, though not a good as Pizza Express but the service was just too intrusive and "corporate". Twice we were asked, "so what have you been doing today?". When leaving we were asked, "so where are you off to now". Whatever happened to discrete service? Sometimes enthusiastic staff can make this natural but the same lines were used by different staff and it felt forced.

It says something that it was pretty quite on a Friday evening when other places were really busy.

The answer? Use the local independent places- Granata- over the Road from Ask or the new Il Padrino in Church Walk.

Colchester Ask restaurant is clean, modern & welcoming. The food is good although starters can be a little on the small side when purchased as a meal deal using a voucher code. Wine choice good but a bit pricey. Atmosphere in restaurant nice & relaxing although we did have couple next to ask who were constantly on their phones which was a little annoying. (Luckily they left before us so we managed to enjoy the rest of our evening without listening to their telephone conversations!) would recommend Ask to couples, families & even singletons. You are made to feel very welcome.

This is a typical ASK restaurant, it is ok but nothing to special. The staff are very friendly and the service is good. The food was pretty good without being amazing.

My partner and I ate here last week for dinner, we have a Taste Card and used it to obtain 50% off food.

The restaurant decor is pleasant, a nice relaxing atmosphere and the staff were extremely friendly. The only down side (and it's quite a big thing) is that they seem to like to overcook things in the oven here! I noticed a couple of other people's dishes beinf brought out looked a bit burnt, and when our appetisers came and then our starters a short time later they were all burnt! The bread was black and tasted like charcoal, the king prawns were black and very over-cooked, and the deep fried calamari were like bullets they were so over-cooked.

We were very disappointed....

The restaurant redeemed itself somewhat with the mains (porchetta and a pasta dish) and the desserts were absolutely delicious, so save some room for them. If the starters had been up to the same standard as the mains and desserts I'd give this 4 or 5 stars but it only gets 3 due to lots of charcoal on our plates! We might go back again and give it another try, afterall using the Taste Card on Mon-Thur gets you 50% food for 2 people so is a good bargain. If we go back I'll let you know how it goes....

This is the second time I have been here now and once again the food was excellent, the place was very busy but the service was still very good with friendly staff. My daughter had a money off voucher which made it great value for the money. The restaurant is slightly off from the centre of town and parking can be difficult, better to go after 6pm when you can park accross the road. There were special menus with 2 or 3 course prices and the normal menu. Although it is part of a chain the atmosphere was nice.
