“Castle was closed”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We had hoped to look round the impressive looking castle but it is closed until 2014 for refurbishment and restoration, bit dissapointed but still got to look round the grounds.

“Watch this space - closed until spring 2014”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The museum is closed to the public and will re-open in Spring 2014. I have always enjoyed my visits to the museum but have often felt that it contained a contradictory mix with items from differing periods displayed close together.
The plan is to "gut" the contents and reconstruct the collection to present a more coherent history of the town.
If you visit in the meantime there is plenty to "entertain" in the area, pop into the Tourist Office opposite the Castle and they will be happy to give advice.

“A good chance to find out about the Romans in Britain”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The strong point of this museum is the amount of material they hold and they determination to present it in a way to interest all age groups. There is a dedication to making museums in this area even better and Colchester Castle should benefit greatly from the "facelift" if the success of the improved Christchurch Musem in Ipswich (under the same organisation) is anything to go by.
The history of Colchester comes across in a lively and interesting way and you are taken through all ages with very clear and easily understood notices and labels.
It is worth visiting the site to visit the gardens too so even if you can't go into the Castle, or choose not to, walking around or having a quiet sit in the grounds is well worth doing. The groundsmen do a wonderful job keeping the colour going and the standard of planting is high. Quite rightly everyone seems to concentrate on the Museum, but for those interested in gardening, the gardens are worth a visit in their own right. You pay to get into the Castle, but there is no charge for the gardens.

“Boring and dated”
Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

As a history student at the university of essex this was on my bucket list, so I felt so let down. Compared to other tourist castles like Warwick Colchester castle was very boring. There are small exhibits inside but they are vague and irrelevant. . It is factual to the level of small children, but even great opportunities for history facts (such as the witch trials in England) are brief and overlooked. Sadly the inside of the Castle has been somewhat renovated so that you cannot see how it would have looked during its use. The castle is however beautiful from the exterior and there are lovely child friendly grounds and pubs outside. Would recommend to locals but not those travelling especially for the castle.
