“A walk through history.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

In the long distant past I worked in the house where the Taylor sisters once lived. At the time I was aware of the area but not actively enthusiastic.
It is a while since I walked the area but went back recently.
The Dutch Quarter is a small group of streets sandwiched between the High Street, Castle Park, North Hill and St Peter's Street (line of old Town Wall). It contains many houses which are old, quaint but basically of little interest having been renovated. Hidden amongst these are many of much greater interest and can be found either by joining one of the guided tours, aid of a guide book or just by wandering and exploring. With the exception of St Helena's Chapel none are open to the public.
Situated on the slope leading down to the River Colne this is not wheelchair friendly territory.

“Some special houses, not really a quarter”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

We visited Colchester in July 2009 and being Dutch myself, a Dutch Quarter raised my curiosity. However, this turned out to be a couple of old houses in the same area. A few were very special. However, the pavement was narrow and the cars not nil. OK if you don't expect an atmosphere.

“Colchester's Hidden Gem”

Worth a visit but hidden behind the High Street. Many old half timbered houses line narrow streets that run from the High Street down the hillside.

“its a living place were people live”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2012

its been updated of late which in some ways is good but in others it has taken away its charm
a lot of it is now a pedestrian area and as its on the side of a fairly steep hill can cause problems for the not so able boddied

“Quaint part of the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012

Walked through the Dutch Quarter in May and liked it very much. Just off the High Street you're stepping into quite a different and quaint part of the city. I took some nice pictures.
